Job Summary

Key Responsibilities

Function as an engineering lead for teams performing design of high voltage electrical substation projects. Direct the production of electrical engineering deliverables including relay panel drawings, single lines, three lines, AC and DC schematics, equipment wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, equipment arrangement and elevation drawings, grounding, and conduit plan drawings. Develop preliminary layouts and calculations for projects. Lead team to design and engineer substation physical layout, section and detail drawings, grounding and raceway drawings, rigid bus calculations, voltage drop calculations, and bill of materials. Assist in protection and control design. Coordinate design with civil/structural team. Assist in preparation of project proposals, scope of work, cost estimates, conceptual design, budgeting, and scheduling. Perform quality check on engineering deliverables including one-lines, control schematics, connection diagrams and engineering calculations including conductor sizing, AC/DC station service loading, conduit fill, and voltage drop. Improve overall team output by mentoring and training lower level professionals; has direct design engineer report(s). No hire/fire authority.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, plus four years’ related substation design experience. Must be a licensed Professional Engineer or equivalent. Experience must include working with complex engineering client standards and metrics, and with IEEE and NEC standards. Experience must include: Design of high voltage electrical transmission substations of 69 KV or greater voltage; Preparing a variety of electrical engineering deliverables, including: Relay and station one-lines, equipment connection diagrams, panel elevations, and protection & control schematics for power substation facilities; Preparing auxiliary power equipment sizing calculations; Designing equipment arrangement, elevation views, grounding and conduit plans; Preparing wiring diagrams for protective relaying panels; Performing and reviewing engineering calculations related to substation projects including AC/DC station service loading, conductor sizing, conduit fill, and voltage drop; Creating RTU control, status and analog point lists, raceway/cable schedules, bill of materials, and nameplates; Developing recommendations for equipment and materials selection; Reviewing and approving vendor drawings; Developing construction release documents; Supporting ongoing construction by answering technical questions from the field crew and developing a solution to any unforeseen construction issues; and understanding and adhering to budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Must have experience with AutoCAD software. Must have good written and verbal communications skills in English.
