Currently, HGL is seeking a Staff Scientist in the Midwest US. The Staff Scientist will be responsible for supporting multiple projects primarily across the Midwest and western US including multiple multi-year U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contracts, and emerging contaminant (PFAS) investigations and remediation.

Responsibilities/Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading various field assignments including drilling oversight; field team leader for environmental investigation and remediation projects; collecting environmental samples from environmental media, including soil, soil vapor, groundwater, surface water, and sediment; data management support; developing data tables, figures, and reports; developing boring logs and review/interpretation of geological boring logs. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for office work under the direction of individual project managers. Must be a team-oriented person willing to conduct a variety of field assignments and write cohesive report sections on the evaluation of investigative and remediation results.

HGL is flexible regarding location in the Midwest US with preferred locations in KS, NE, MO, and the Kansas City area due to proximity to HGL offices and project sites. A remote/teleworking work location is an option for qualified applicants. Travel will be required within the Midwest and western US. It is anticipated that field assignments may require 25% or greater travel requirements, especially during peak field season.

Required Skills

Required skills include knowledge of environmental investigations and remediation projects regulated by RCRA and CERCLA; must be able to execute multiple tasks concurrently as field team leader; excellent communication and organizational skills; experience working under detailed quality assurance/quality control programs.

Must be proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, and other MS Office applications.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with sampling of various environmental media for PFAS is a plus, but not required.

  • Oversight of sonic drilling is a plus, but not required.

Required Experience

  • Must have a minimum of four years of environmental field investigation experience.

  • Preparation of work plans and project deliverables (e.g., QAPPs, FSPs, RI/FS Reports, SSHP/HASPs, technical memoranda).

  • Experience completing field investigations inclusive of soil, soil vapor, and groundwater utilizing various sampling techniques.

  • Knowledge of and experience with RCRA, CERCLA, DoD, DOE, or USEPA projects.

Preferred Experience

  • PFAS sampling and remediation experience.

  • Vapor intrusion field sampling and mitigation experience a plus.

  • Field subcontractor oversight inclusive of soil borings and well installations utilizing various drilling methods.

  • Experience with Midwest and western US lithology and boring/well depths.

  • Experience with preparation/updates of conceptual site models.

  • Remedial system operations and maintenance.

  • Environmental regulatory permitting and compliance experience.

  • Six plus years of environmental field investigation experience.

Required Education

Minimum of B.A. / B.S. degree in a field related to Environmental Studies, geology, or chemistry.

Preferred Education

M.S. degree in science field related to Environmental Studies (M.S. degree may account for up to 2 years of experience).

Required Qualifications

To perform the duties of this position a person will need to be in good physical health and be able to lift up to 30 pounds in order to perform field tasks. Field tasks may take place in environments which include rugged terrain and weather extremes. The successful candidate will be required to possess or obtain OSHA HAZWOPER certification upon employment and be able to work in various levels of PPE including a respirator, if required.

Travel, overtime, and moderate physical work will routinely be required. While travel requirements are project-specific and will vary, applicant should have the ability to travel approximately 30% or greater depending upon applicant's location.

Preferred Qualifications

PG in midwestern states, MO well installation, and/or NE GW Professional certifications (or capability to obtain certification within one year).
