The YMCA serves thousands of families a year by providing safe, fun, and engaging after-school programs for their children. Youth Development Leaders play a key role in creating and maintaining a positive atmosphere that upholds our 4 Core Values and promotes education, healthy living, safety, creativity, anti-bullying, and inclusion among all youth.
Schedules are flexible and include weekday morning (7:00 am-9:00 a.m.) and/or afternoon (3:00 pm-6:00 p.m.) shifts.

Hourly Rates*
Minimum $10.50/hour : Youth Development Leaders
Minimum $9.00/hour : Youth Development Assistants
*increases to rates are case-by-case based on experience and education relevant to to the field of youth development
The Youth Development Leader provides direct supervision to a group of children in a YMCA before and after school program. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers and school community. Assists in the coordination, planning, supervision and implementation of all activities. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall before and after school experience
Supervises a group of children.
Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
Attends staff meetings and trainings.
Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
Consistently demonstrates and reinforces the values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility
Consistently demonstrate positive interaction with all children; talk to them and treat them with dignity and respect.
Help children to develop a positive self-esteem and sense of self-worth
Consistently demonstrate and reinforce the values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility.
Encourage parents to participate or volunteer in special events or on field trips
Express appreciation for families’ interest in their child(s) participation in the program
Some positions may have additional responsibilities such as:
Insure that the program is operated in a safe and purposeful manner, insuring that all licensing and YMCA guidelines are met or exceeded.
Implement group activity plan as assigned and according to state licensing and YMCA guidelines.
Communicate on a daily basis to families regarding the behavior of their children positive and negative (make sure to have parents review and sign corrective behavior reports).
Youth Assistant Job Qualifications:
Minimum age of 16.
Understanding of and ability to apply principles of quality youth development and programming.
Sensitivity to clientele and staff representing a variety of family, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Active engagement with and supervision of children requiring physical stamina, alertness and emotional stability.
Ability to work with others in a team environment.
Youth Leader Job Qualifications
Minimum age of 18.
High school diploma or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
Previous experience working with school age children (may include working as a babysitter, nanny or other childcare program).
Commitment to provide quality youth development services at all levels.
Demonstrated public relations and leadership skills in working with program parents, school personnel, children and co-workers.
Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
Ability to work with others in a team environment.
Have a general understanding of computer technology.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings requiring physical stamina, alertness and emotional stability.
