Summary:

The Manager, Sustainability is responsible for assisting in the development and execution of a global sustainability strategy to enable achievement of the company’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals and targets. This position will collaborate with all relevant corporate functions and operational site leaders to provide guidance and support metrics-driven sustainability initiatives across all jurisdictions in which Compass Minerals operates. The successful candidate will be passionate about creating positive change through the achievement of shared ESG goals and energize others to be a part of this change, in concert with the operational, commercial and financial commitments of the company.

This position will require regular travel to operational sites for coordination of sustainability initiatives and ongoing collaboration with site leaders and operational subject matter experts to ensure prioritization of site-specific sustainability efforts.

Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to the following:

ESG Strategy and Process Management:

  • Working closely with the Senior Director, Sustainability and Government Affairs and Chief Public Affairs and Sustainability Officer to support the development, evolution and implementation of the company’s ESG strategy

  • In collaboration with corporate and operational management, help drive the development, implementation, tracking and validation of a diverse and metric-driven portfolio of initiatives to drive positive improvement in ESG focus areas including but not limited to: greenhouse gas emissions, alternative energy opportunities, freshwater conservation, waste management and diversion, diversity and inclusion, employee development, and a responsible supply chain

  • Routinely provide active field leadership and in-person presence during operational site visits, supporting sustainability-related innovations and opportunity assessments

  • Serve as key leadership resource for internal initiatives, awareness and recognition campaigns, such as site-led activities to celebrate Earth Week

  • Help cultivate relationships and represent the company as needed on sustainability or related committees at member trade associations or councils to help advance sustainability initiatives within the industry

Data Collection and Management:

  • Oversee and manage data collection and analysis within the company’s digital sustainability data management platform, with a focus on site-based environmental data including greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, freshwater use and waste generation/diversion

  • Continually assess and refine ESG data management processes and procedures to ensure completeness and accuracy, standardization, collection efficiency and usability

  • Working closely with Senior Director, Sustainability and Government Affairs, support the verification of ESG processes, data and calculations via external assurance audits by independent, third-party contractor

Sustainability Reporting and Communications:

  • Working closely with the Senior Director, Sustainability and Government Affairs and the company’s external ESG agency partner, inform and support the development and annual publication of a GRI and SASB compliant ESG report, as well as the completion of sustainability disclosures such as CDP

  • Support the Commercial team in completing ESG-related customer questionnaires and surveys

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director, Corporate Affairs, help implement an internal communications campaign around the company’s sustainability initiatives to ensure employee awareness and active engagement in driving success

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Sustainability, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering or related field required

  • Minimum of 6 years related experience required; corporate experience with a publicly traded company preferred

  • Career experience in mining/manufacturing industries preferred, but not required

  • Proven track record of leading operational initiatives through to implementation

  • In-depth knowledge of operational management in environmental focus areas including energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, freshwater conservation and waste management

  • Hands-on experience with environmental data collection, management and analysis

  • Technical expertise in GHG Protocol, CDP, TCFD, GRI, SASB, UN SDGs, UNGC a plus, but not required

Additional Specific Knowledge and Skills:

  • Superior project and data management skills, with an ability to bring individuals and cross-functional teams together, drive collaborative action, and lead initiatives to successful, on-schedule conclusion

  • Strategic thinker with an ability to rapidly understand, distill and communicate diverse business challenges and opportunities

  • Ability to manage multiple, high-level projects simultaneously, with superior attention to detail

  • Strong interpersonal skills; team player with a proven ability to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of an organization including senior leadership

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills

  • Proficient experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and Power Point

  • Experience with digital ESG data management platforms preferred
