POSITION DESCRIPTION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs construction inspection, technical engineering design, surveying,
administrative support, records and asset management, and daily customer service. Has active contact with the
public, contractors, and other customers. Work varies with some leeway for discretion and independent
judgement.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
o Prepares routine designs, plans, specifications and bid documents for approval; makes preliminary estimates of
work and material required; prepares cost computations.
o Inspects for the installation of street, curb, gutter, sidewalk, storm, sanitary sewer, water main, bridges and
other public works projects for compliance with approved plans and specifications; prepares as-built drawings,
maps and plans; files and maintains engineering records.
o Performs simple to moderately complex engineering drafting and design work utilizing computer aided drafting
methods and GIS-based programs.
o Completes and/or interprets construction plans for a wide variety of engineering projects.
o Advises developers, builders, utility companies and property owners in engineering matters.
o Conducts traffic counts, speed studies, turning movements and assists in other traffic engineering related
duties.
o Maintains asset management and information systems including geographic information systems.
o Responds to weather and other emergencies.
o Performs overtime as required and other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:
None.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:
o High school diploma or G.E.D.
o Two (2) years course work in engineering technology or related field OR
? Equivalent combination of education, training and experience in civil engineering field work and/or drafting.
o Must obtain construction inspection verification from KDOT within one (1) year from start date of employment.
o Must possess a valid Kansas drivers license at hire.
o Possession of a valid Kansas Class B commercial drivers license (CDL) with air brake and tanker
endorsements, or ability to obtain within one (1) year from the start date of employment.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees and pay hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL training
at Salina Area Technical College.

Operates a Microsoft Windows based computer and utilize basic Office software. (Daily)
Develops routine designs, plans, specifications and bid documents for approval with GIS, AutoCAD, pavement
management, and other related computer software. (Daily)
Performs typical land, topographic and construction surveying activities. (Daily)
Prepares, files and maintains multi-sized engineering maps, plans and other records. (Daily)
