We are hiring a Food Safety & Quality Microbiology Lab Supervisor for our manufacturing facility in Salina, KS!

This position is responsible for supporting the food safety and quality management system and the operation of the chemistry and microbiology laboratory.

  • Responsible for maintaining the of the site food safety plans.

  • Conduct risk assessments and complete plan reassessments as materials, equipment and processes are changed to address any potential food safety hazards.

  • Review food safety plan reassessments and updates with site’s cross-functional senior management to maintain the adherence to the food safety and quality management system.

  • Supervise chemistry and microbiological laboratory operation and personnel.

  • Maintain the laboratory and site’s certifications and ensure their practices adhere to all applicable state, federal and internal regulations.

  • Responsible for internal auditing program for the site facilities and laboratory to assure adherence to internal and external testing procedures and standards.

  • Train chemistry and microbiology laboratory personnel in internal good laboratory practices and the proper chemical and microbiological techniques to effectively follow laboratory testing procedures.

  • Train pre-op monitors to effectively perform organoleptic inspection of product and non-product contact surfaces, environment areas and of completion ATP and culture swabbing.

  • Identity trends and non-conformances in chemistry and microbiological laboratory testing, communicate with site management.

  • Lead department and plant level cross-functional teams in the determination of root cause and implementation of corrective actions to resolve chemical (material & finished goods) or microbiological (pre-op, environmental, material & finished goods) related trends and non-conformances.

  • Resolve internal and external complaints related to FSQ department analysis of materials and finished goods.

  • Responsible for design of sampling and testing plans, then the analysis and reporting of results to support department and company initiatives.

  • Negotiates contracts (in conjunction with FSQ and Purchasing department management) with suppliers of laboratory materials and equipment.

  • Maintain and develop operating budget for the chemistry and microbiology laboratories.

  • Coordinates the maintenance of microbiological laboratory and equipment.

  • Maintain current on regulatory issues in area of responsibility and represents the company to regulatory inspectors in area of responsibility.

  • Supervises employees including skills development, safety, housekeeping policy administration, discipline, employee relations, performance reviews, cost control and problem solving.

  • Interview and/or hires employees following required EEO and Affirmative Action guidelines and ensuring employees receive the proper training.

  • Conducts performance appraisals and administer disciplinary and termination action when necessary.

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Microbiology and/or Science Related Field of Study

Years of Related Experience: Typically has 5-7 years related experience


  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general technical scientific or business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.

  • Preferred people leadership experience in professional setting.

  • Ability to effectively communicate through written reports business correspondence and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to effectively present information orally and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a functioning microbiology laboratory with the associated biological chemical and physical hazards.
