GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision; responsible for a wide variety of tasks related to all parks maintenance that
include, but is not limited to, maintenance of irrigation systems, turf, trees, shrubs, flowers, medians,
trails, and equipment, as well as the construction and maintenance of grounds within city owned parks,
community buildings, and recreation facilities. Work is of some complexity requiring individual judgment
within prescribed standards and procedures.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
o Prepares and maintains parks, athletic fields, medians, recreation facilities, and other public facilities
as well as the construction and maintenance of grounds within city owned parks, and community
buildings.
o Performs work in installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of in-ground sprinkler systems.
o Plans and performs work in seeding, planting and maintaining turf, trees, and shrubs including
watering, trimming, mowing, fertilizing, aerification, weed and pest control.
o Applies fertilizers and pesticides as required; recognizes plant diseases and takes appropriate
action to counteract.
o Operates trucks, mowers, utility vehicles, and other light equipment; operates blowers, chain saws,
hedge trimmers, skid steer, spraying equipment, tractors and attachments, and other similar
equipment or vehicles.
o Performs preventative and routine maintenance; performs equipment safety inspections; services
and performs minor repairs to equipment.
o Provides custodial services for parks and facilities including cleaning of restrooms and removal of
trash and debris.
o Leads work crews and maintains records of activities and routine operational records; works on
special projects and assignments; responds to weather and other emergencies.
o Assists other staff as necessary; interacts with the public; maintains and enforces park rules.
o Performs overtime as required and other duties as assigned; varied schedule, including potential
nights, weekends and/or holidays.
SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:
May lead small group of workers in field work as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:
o High school diploma or G.E.D.
o One (1) year work experience in the areas of irrigation work, general horticulture and/or landscape
maintenance and equipment operation.
o Must obtain certified pesticide license within two (2) years from start date of employment.
o Must possess a valid Kansas drivers license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently,
and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Climbing/Balancing: Climbs inclines and ladders, uneven surfaces, balance required.
Walking: Extensive amount required.
Stooping/Bending: Frequently.
Stand/Sit: Sit about 20 percent of the time.
Reaching: Frequent, overhead as well as horizontal.
Vision: Adequate to perform essential functions.
Color Vision: Adequate to perform essential functions.
Hearing: Adequate to perform essential functions.
Speech: Moderate need to express ideas and be understood.
