The largest health care provider in Johnson County, Kansas, the SMH network includes Shawnee Mission Medical Center, SMH – Overland Park and SMH – Prairie Star. The 54-acre campus at SMMC is comprised of the main hospital, a community health education building, six physician office buildings and an associate child care center. The Emergency Department at SMMC is the busiest in Johnson County. We deliver more babies each year at the Shawnee Mission Birth Center than any other hospital in the metropolitan area and our Center for Women’s Health is nationally recognized. We have 10 Shawnee Mission Primary Care locations with more than 70 Board-certified doctors who specialize in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics as well as Centra Care Shawnee Mission Urgent Care and Spira Care locations.
You will be responsible for:
Shares knowledge with coworkers; serves as a resource to internal & external customers on issues related to hospital & laboratory policies & protocols.

Relays messages, correspondence & information promptly; initiates communication with & anticipates needs of Anatomic Pathology and Cytology.
Works with nursing and physician staff to effectively collect and handle Anatomic Pathology and Cytology specimens.
Processes referred specimens for Anatomic Pathology and Cytology and coordinates with Transcription to facilitate diagnostic material send-outs.
Oversees the disposal of specimens after case sign-out, coordinates process for autopsy (including fetal autopsy), and manages storage of permanent Anatomic Pathology hold specimens
Coordinates perinatal cytogenetic testing from Labor and Delivery
Monitors supply usage & notes trends.
Recognizes and supports cost-effective ideas and initiatives.
Uses LIS efficiently to register patients, retrieve test results & obtain information, in keeping with established protocols.
Recognizes that the attainment of knowledge is every employee’s responsibility & accepts accountability for staying current on all written or electronic communication.
Enhances technical & professional knowledge by pursuing available mandatory & continuing education opportunities.
Understands & utilizes department resources, including department manuals, administrative policy manuals, safety manuals, MSDS & reference material.
Follows established safety & biohazard protocols.
What will you need?
High School Diploma or Equivalent
No Previous Experience Required
Associate’s Degree or Graduate of a Technical School Preferred
1 to 2 Years of Position-Related Experience Preferred
