This Research Chemist position is based at the Compass Minerals Innovation Center located in Stilwell, KS and has a central role in developing, synthesizing and formulating essential mineral based products for our customers and working with R&D, commercial and manufacturing teams to enable minerals from company’s core areas (Salt, Lithium and Potassium Mining) help enrich lives.
Essential Job Functions: Include but are not limited to the following:

Independently perform inorganic synthesis including crystallization & purification experiments and characterize them at small scale.
Perform fundamental research to develop next generation products to satisfy the needs of our customers.
Optimize the synthetic and formulation approaches to increase yield and make recommendations to improve production at scale.
Be a core contributor to an excellent R&D organization, tasked with identifying next generation products and support development of these products to commercialization.
Support product and process development of the salt, lithium and plant nutrition business units. Work in sync with a team of multidisciplinary scientists, to ensure that formulation development, screening and product engineering is suitable for the product concept being developed.
Work with product management to evaluate competitive products and customer needs to bring forward new product opportunities.
Interact with engineering/scale up groups to provide fundamental insight into engineering projects/issues.
Interact with quality and process engineering personnel to review trends and preempt problems.
Help develop new application technologies internally and with external collaborators to develop novel delivery methods for salt, lithium and plant nutrition and salt product pipelines.
Propose and lead new product or process ideas through the formulation and handling metrics of the Stage & Gate process.

Education and/or Experience:
PhD in Chemistry, preferably Inorganic Chemistry with 0-3 years of experience.
Proficient in synthesis of inorganic compounds, crystallization and purification techniques.
Excellent track record on compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
Experience with standard analytical and separation technology tools
Individual needs to have exemplary communication skills to enable successful sharing of knowledge, data and results across a multi-disciplinary team with diverse background.
Must be proficient in Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, and statistical packages.
Formulation experience with minerals & salts including collaborating with the scale-up and manufacturing team to develop formulas that meet the needs of customers will be considered a plus.
