Stormont-Vail Healthcare Activities Therapist in Topeka, Kansas

Summary : Works in conjunction with the treatment team in his/her primary role of assessing individual client needs/functional abilities and then providing therapeutic activities to remediate the effects of illness and assist clients to attain optimal levels of functioning. The role requires that the Activities Therapist have expertise in communicating with and about psychiatric patients, documentation, organization skills and an ability to plan and conduct therapeutic groups in both individual and group modalities. Furthermore, the individual in this role must be able to provide therapeutic groups and activities to patients across the life span.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Communicates in a professional, courteous and non-judgmental manner with patients, families, staff and other clinicians.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of psychiatric patients’ rights.

  • Demonstrates and awareness and knowledge of individual legal issues insofar as those impact the patient’s treatment.

  • Strives to manage situations in a manner, which minimizes the risk to the patient, other staff members and the institution.

  • Identifies patient learning abilities and needs and implements appropriate measures to meet those needs.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality.

  • Assesses individual activity therapy needs based on observation and firsthand knowledge of the patient and in conjunction with the multidisciplinary treatment team.

  • Plans, implements and directs therapeutic activity program. Assesses individual patient participation and ability within the various activities and groups.

  • Verbally communicates and documents patient activity therapy participation along with any other pertinent information/observation in a timely manner.

  • Acts as a resource for staff in terms of assisting staff to plan other therapeutic activities or in individual work with specific patients.

  • Functions with awareness and applies safety measures as identified in mandatory in-services, protocols and hospital policies.

  • Contributes to and participates in department performance and quality improvement to ensure quality of care.

  • Initiates and develops positive working relationships with all staff and healthcare personnel.

  • Provides observations and feedback regarding patient participation and ability to other team members in planning patients’ care regimen and discharge.

  • Demonstrates ability to express self clearly in verbal and written communication.

  • Acts as a patient advocate and communicate patients’ needs in a timely manner to appropriate staff.

  • Recognizes and utilizes appropriate chain of communication and decision-making.

  • Works as scheduled. Communicates need for overtime with direct supervisor. Communicates alterations in schedule with appropriate staff.

  • Utilizes supplies and resources appropriately.

  • Prioritizes and completes work within confines of assigned work hours.

  • Utilizes work time effectively.

  • Take responsibility to keep self-updated and competent.

  • Seeks validation of knowledge base, skill level and decision making as necessary and assertively seeks guidance in areas of question.

Education/Experience:

Graduate from an accredited program with a Bachelor’s Degree in Activity Therapy. This could include a degree in Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Horticulture therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, Psychology or Counseling. Knowledgeable about the appropriate psychiatric care of children, adolescent, adult and senior adult patients.

Certificates and Licenses:

Certification is preferable.
