Job Description

The Computational and Digital Sciences group in the Manufacturing Division seeks an Associate Principal Scientist who will develop and utilize advanced computational models to promote the commercialization of large molecules (including biologics, vaccines, and sterile liquids). As a potential candidate, you should have advanced graduate degree (s) in an engineering or scientific discipline with industrial knowledge relevant to modeling of large molecules. Your working knowledge includes modeling and computational sciences applied to large molecules.

In this role, you will build and apply predictive tools for drug substance (upstream and downstream) and drug product manufacturing unit operations using a variety of process-modeling tools. Examples of techniques you may use include computational fluid dynamics (CFD), flowsheet models, population balance modeling, engineering models (mass, momentum, energy transport, chemical/biochemical reaction kinetics, etc.), data motivated models, and other modeling methods.

This position is based in West Point, PA (preferred location), or Kenilworth, NJ, USA.

Roles and Position Tasks

  • Work collaboratively with scientists and engineers to develop end-to-end modeling solutions that will help with commercialization of large molecule manufacturing operations. Examples of problems on which you will work include: scale-up or scale-down, tech-transfer, fluid-flow and multiphase-flow modeling occurring in drug-substance unit operations (bioreactors, mixing vessels, chromatography, filtration) and drug product unit operations (freezing, thawing, mixing, filling), as well as process economic modeling, plant simulation, etc.

  • Direct the development and deployment of computational tools, using a combination of commercial software, open-source tools, and in-house models (that you may have created). Demonstrate creativity in solving complex, physical/biochemical problems faced during industrial manufacturing.

  • Work objectively with minimal supervision. Direct the use of computational techniques on project teams and in the department. Interact directly with project teams to identify modeling opportunities, and propose and execute modeling solutions to complex, experimental problems.

  • Convey effectively with project teams on the status of workstreams; translate modeling results to actual, experimental outcomes in projects. Present at internal and external forums (conferences, publications).

  • Direct external collaborations (with universities, research organizations, etc.). Work objectively with internal and external partners (e.g., CMOs, CDMOs, vendors) to develop novel modeling solutions to promote tech transfer.

Education

Doctoral degree (PhD) with 4-7 years of relevant industry knowledge, or a master’s degree (MS / M.S.) with 8-11 years of relevant industry knowledge.

Degree may be in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Engineering, or any other relevant discipline. Research knowledge in a computational specialization.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expertise with several computational techniques relevant to large-molecules modeling. Relevant techniques include (but not limited to): computational fluid dynamics (CFD), flowsheet models, population balance modeling (PBM), first-value engineering models (mass, momentum, energy transport, chemical/biochemical reaction kinetics, etc.), process economic modeling, plant simulation, statistical methods, data standard models, numerical methods (be able to setup and solve linear/non-linear equations, ODEs, PDEs, etc.), and other modeling methods.

  • Proficient in programming in at least one standard language: Python, Matlab, C/C++, R, etc.

  • Industrial or relevant research knowledge with large-molecule modalities (biologics, vaccines, sterile liquids) and their manufacturing processes. Expertise in upstream operations, downstream operations, or both.

Preferred Industry Knowledge and Skills:

  • Industrial or academic knowledge with large molecule modalities (biologics, vaccines, and/or sterile liquids) and their manufacturing operations. Knowledgeable of upstream and/or downstream unit operations.

  • History of successful implementation of modeling solutions in the commercialization and cGMP environments is highly desired.

  • high-performance computing industry knowledge.

  • Excellent organization skills and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent stakeholder management skills and ability to work in cross-disciplinary teams. Excellent communication skills, verbal and written. Strong history of publications, presentations, and/or patents
