Humana is seeking a highly motivated and talented attorney to join Humana’s Law Department. This Counsel position will be a part of Humana’s Health Plan Contracting team within the Law Department and provide legal counsel primarily for issues related to Humana’s provider network and contracts. This Counsel position will exercise considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments and requires experience in drafting, negotiating, and analyzing contracts. This Counsel position will be responsible for making decisions on moderately complex to complex issues. This Counsel position will be expected to exercise excellent judgment and be able to perform assigned tasks with minimal supervision while knowing when certain issues should be escalated. This Counsel position will be expected to be able to think strategically and creatively in order to achieve business objectives in a way that mitigates risk and ensures compliance with applicable laws. This Counsel position will be expected to work cross functionally and collaboratively within Humana’s Law Department and various business areas.
This Counsel position will assist assigned markets, business areas, and corporate leaders with a variety of topics and initiatives, including, but not limited to: (i) drafting and negotiation of fee for service and value based provider contracts for medical services including, but not limited to, the following types of contracts: physician, hospital, network, ancillary, management services organization and accountable care provider; (ii) pre-litigation provider disputes along with reviewing and drafting settlement agreements, when appropriate; and (iii) analyzing contracts and providing legal advice on complex contracting questions and issues.
Work Location:
This Counsel position is a remote position. Depending on the candidate’s location and subject to office availability, the candidate may be able to choose to work from a Humana office either full time or as part of a hybrid office and home schedule. There may be some travel expected to Humana’s headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky and other designated locations, but it will be minimal and not on a regular basis.

Required Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited school law school
Active admission to at least one state bar association with the ability to register as in-house, if required by the applicable jurisdiction(s)
Current, unrestricted license to practice law
3-5 years of experience working in the healthcare industry
Strong understanding of contract fundamentals, with at least 2 years of contract drafting and negotiation experience
Strong legal writing and analytical skills with the ability to take ownership of your work and assigned tasks and manage such work and tasks independently
Critical thinking skills and comfort navigating complex legal issues in a timely manner
Ability to work independently and in team settings, as needed
A deep understanding of provider network dynamics with the ability to apply this knowledge to situations, inquiries and document preparation
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate legal issues and concerns
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working as in-house counsel for a health plan, physician organization, or hospital
Experience drafting, reviewing and providing advice on provider contracts

Pay Range
The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.
$138,900 - $191,000 per year
This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
