Job Duties: This position will work with the Third Judicial District’s Domestic/ Family Court divisions to assist parents in divorce, post-divorce, and paternity cases resolve conflicts regarding child custody, residency, and/or parenting time by providing Conciliation and Child custody investigation services. The dispute resolution process of Conciliation involves facilitating agreements between parents by providing them direction and encouragement, finding creative ways to assist them in working together towards agreement and coparenting, and obtaining information from outside sources (such as schools, community agencies, counselors, medical and mental health professionals, law enforcement and others) as necessary.  The ability to maintain control of a conversation during times of conflict is vital.  Specific tasks would include, but are not limited to, communicating with, interviewing, and interacting with parents, children, and various other relevant resources, writing reports to the Court, drafting agreements, making recommendations in a child’s best interest regarding child custody, parenting time and/or other specific parenting issues, testifying in court, conducting drug and alcohol testing, maintaining accurate case documentation, and resource referral as needed.  Home visits may be required, with colleague accompaniment to enhance safety.  Required certification training to become a Kansas Supreme Court approved mediator will be provided.  Assigned duties and position description are subject to change to meet the needs of the Court and/or agency.

Required Education and Experience: bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Social work, Criminal Justice, or another related field is required. At least one year working directly with families.

This position requires strong interpersonal skills, professional boundaries, attention to detail, the ability to act as a neutral third party, organizational and time management skills, and the ability to learn court computer programs. The desired candidate must demonstrate the ability to maintain calm in stressful situations and possess professional writing skills. The candidate should be able to work independently under supervision.   A cover letter and writing sample will be required.

Preferred qualifications:   Current certification in Mediation/ Conciliation; experience working with family court, high conflict families, or families who have separated.
