Nelnet Front-end Developer in Topeka, Kansas

As a Front-end Developer at Nelnet, you will work collaboratively with your stakeholders (design, development, and product owners) to create and support reusable front-end components (Angular and React) that will assist product teams in the efficient delivery of high-quality, accessible user interfaces.

This position requires work in support of the Company’s contract with the United States Department of Education (“ED”). As such, the United States Government requires that any applicant for this position must complete United States Government security clearance. Effective June 1, 2018, ED has informed Nelnet that security clearance applications for foreign nationals are not being accepted or processed. In light of this direction from ED, Nelnet will be unable to hire applicants without United States citizenship for such positions.

Colorado Candidates: Pay range for this role is $75,000-$100,000


  • Own development, maintenance, and support of Nelnet’s design system solution.

  • Design solutions and execute through hands-on development, quality assurance, and prototyping.

  • Deliver code in an Agile software development using test-driven development methodologies.

  • Participate in development life cycle activities like system design, coding, testing, documentation, and production release.

  • Balance long-term velocity with short-term needs.


Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience required.


  • Experience delivering enterprise class JavaScript web applications.

  • Depth of experience with JavaScript Frameworks and TypeScript.

  • Advanced in: writing semantic, compliant and accessible HTML; writing modular and maintainable CSS/SASS.


  • Frontend focused - identify as a frontend dev who also has backend skills;

  • Able to support and create reusable Angular components

  • In addition to Angular, experience with React, and other JavaScriptlibraries/frameworks,HTML5, CSS3, SASS, and cross-browser development.

  • Passionate – write high-quality, semantic, performant, maintainable, scalable, reusable code.

  • Systems thinker – considerate of broad architectural implications in solutions; comfortable working in a large front-end codebase with many stakeholders.

  • End-user minded - experience in accessibility best practices, WCAG 2.0+ AA-compliant markup, and ARIA.

  • Owner mentality - participate in all aspects of the design process to frame problems, make concepts and prototypes, inform design system patterns, and deliver final solutions.

  • Design sensibility - speak the language of designers; are an advocate for the user. Understand and recognize good aesthetic design and usability.

  • Independent - able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, with minimal supervision.

  • Collaborative - partner with talented coworkers in a highly collaborative, supportive environment (Engineering, Design, Research, Strategy, IA).

  • Communicator - present and document solutions and technical concepts clearly; conduct trainings and outreach.

  • Explorative - try new things; track the state of the art; are self-motivated to try new experiments.

  • Must display critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and be motivated and excited by technical challenges
