Tanaq Environmental, LLC. (TEL) delivers environmental engineering, investigation, consulting, and remediation services to government agencies and private clients. We focus in the areas of emerging contaminants investigation and remediation; Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) restoration; and Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) support. Primary governmental clients include Department of Defense (DoD) agencies, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). TEL is a subsidiary of the St. George Tanaq Corporation, an Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) committed to serving Federal customers while also giving back to the Alaskan native community and shareholders.

Position Summary

Tanaq Environmental is seeking a Health and Safety Manager to oversee compliance with Tanaq’s Health and Safety Program, implement policies to ensure a safe and healthy work environment, and lead both the strategic level program for the business line, as well as the tactical level program for our specific projects. Typical projects include field work for geologic projects, hydrogeologic investigations, environmental restoration, and compliance projects for US Government and commercial clients. Responsibilities at specific projects include onsite safety compliance reviews, oversight of safety training and site safety personnel, review health and safety plans, accident prevention and site safety and health plans, and has authority to stop work on project activities as required to address safety concerns. The ideal candidate will use their leadership skills, paired with health, safety, and environmental subject matter expertise, to drive a safety culture throughout Tanaq. They will ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental health and safety requirements including the USACE Engineering Manual of Health and Safety Requirements (EM 385-1-1, 2014; 2024) and OSHA Construction, as well as conformance to internal Health and Safety policies, standards, and systems. The Health and Safety Manager will be an essential member of the Tanaq Environmental Leadership Team.

This a hybrid remote work role based in the continental U.S. that requires an estimated travel of 25% or more annually in the United States depending on project requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts risk assessments and develops recommendations for improvements to work processes and safety programs to mitigate risks; implements such improvements.

  • Collaborate with the Environmental Leadership Team to manage a high-performance safety culture by actively coaching and mentoring all staff, providing regular feedback, and fostering professional growth.

  • Ensures regulatory compliance including but not limited to DoD, EPA, and OSHA, including preparing safety documents for projects and regulatory agencies.

  • Proactively builds, nurtures, and maintains business-focused, long-term working relationships with partners inside and outside of the organization and drives safety culture growth.

  • Communicates and reviews all contractual and regulatory requirements involving safety for all projects; ensures that all projects follow applicable state, local, and federal safety regulations including client safety requirements.

  • Inspects project scopes of work and safety related documents to identify safety, health, and environmental risks.

  • Acts as the point of contact for workplace incidents and near misses. Manages and conducts thorough investigations of workplace incidents and near misses, including identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.

  • Collaborates with the Environmental Leadership Team to develop and implement inspection policies/procedures and a schedule of routine inspections and provides reports to document inspection findings.

  • Develops health and safety procedures and policies for all areas of the company.

  • Develops, delivers, and schedules health and safety training and all other training required to comply with OSHA and the USACE EM 385-1-1.

  • Monitors compliance with safety procedures and applicable regulations.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience of Health and Safety Management of field related work.

  • A thorough understanding of relevant local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, USACE) is essential. Must have experience interpreting, understanding, and complying with environmental, health and safety regulations.

  • Strong commitment to site safety and adherence to safety plans.

  • Prior experience working on environmental restoration projects preferred.

  • Prior experience working for federal government clients preferred.

  • Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong communication skills are essential for interacting with employees at all levels, as well as with clients and external stakeholders.

  • The ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs for employees.

  • Organizational skills and ability to plan and manage multiple tasks.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Professional demeanor with a positive, solution-seeking attitude, team player, and personal responsibility.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clear and satisfactory driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team to execute multiple assignments at various locations, providing a consistently high level of quality and accuracy.

  • Must be able to obtain clearance to access military bases and other federal government installations to perform job duties.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental safety, occupational safety, environmental/chemical engineering, environmental studies, or related field required plus 6+ years of relevant experience. (Alternatively, an MS degree in a related discipline plus 4 years relevant experience. In lieu of a degree, the candidate must possess ten years of directly relevant experience at a minimum.)

  • Certified Safety Professional certification required.

  • Current HAZWOPER certification required.

  • OSHA 30 Construction or General industry certification required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able and willing to travel to visit job sites, attend client meetings, and/or attend professional or technical conferences, and the ability to travel, typically 25% or more annually, in the United States.

  • Physically able, with or without accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable outdoor conditions including heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, moisture, dryness, and vibration.

  • This position requires the ability to perform physical activities associated with field work, including walking long distances, climbing ladders, and carrying equipment. Bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching are essential functions of the job.

  • Position requires frequent (more than 50% of workday) performance of repetitive bending & stooping, standing/walking, power gripping/squeezing (hand tools, levers, etc.), operation of vehicles, and lifting less than 25-50 pounds. Often (25-50% of workday) performing work with arms above shoulder level, and keyboard/mouse operations. Occasionally (10-25% of workday) performing repetitive fine hand movements and lifting 50-75 pounds. Rarely (less than 10% of workday), climbing stairs, using portable ladders, working in an environment of heavy, moving, dangerous equipment, and working in confined spaces.

  • Position will require wearing associated personal protective equipment, including, but not limited to safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hats/safety helmets, hearing protection, and respirator.

  • Good near and far vision (corrected to 20/40) is necessary to accurately measure instruments, record data in field logs, and identify potential hazards in the field.

  • Must be able to work in a hybrid remote work arrangement with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and while working on a computer.
