The Manager Underwriting is directly responsible for the acquisition and maintenance of profitable group/individual insurance policies through sound underwriting practices. The position is accountable for agent pre-screening and licensing activities for Advance Insurance Company of Kansas (AICK). The position develops and maintains strong partnerships with brokers, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) marketing personnel and reinsurers. The Manager, Underwriting works closely with consulting actuaries and reinsurers on new product development and large cases.

Compensation
\$96,800 - \$115,000 annually\ Exempt 17

What youll do
Accountable for performance monitoring, policy enforcement, termination process, disciplinary action, hiring, compliance and team development. Maintaining accurate records of all hiring, firing and disciplinary actions.
Direct and manage rating/underwriting department, the preparation of all AICK proposals, renewals, individual risk selection and licensing activities, as well as development of major policies and procedures related to all underwriting and licensing activities.
Examine and evaluate the workflow and processes within the underwriting department. Develop procedures that assure efficiency and insure adequate and consistent selection of risk.
Coordinate the implementation and testing of enhancements related to the rating and underwriting systems.
Negotiate terms for facultative reinsurance with appropriate reinsurer to ensure street premium rates can support reinsurance costs for large cases.
Monitor products and practices underwritten throughout the marketplace and initiate the feasibility of new product development and procedures. Work directly with reinsurers and consulting actuaries to establish new products.
Monitor all medical underwriting activities and procedures. Evaluate and negotiate underwriting authority agreements with various reinsurance companies.
Continuously monitor and evaluate industry issues and underwriting trends.
Responsible for renewing the BCBSKS employee group life/Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) benefit. Responsible for reporting reinsurance volumes for the BCBSKS employee group.
Responsible for underwriting BCBSKS employee applications that are late enrollees or requesting amounts over a Guarantee Issue. Must maintain complete confidentiality of all applications received and underwriting decision made.
Respond to audit inquiries from BCBSKS staff w en Kansas Insurance Department (KID) is conducting our company audit and assist Reinsurance partners, as requested, for a reinsurance audit.
What you need
Education and Experience
A bachelors degree in business administration and/or mathematics, or a related field.
In lieu of degree, minimum of 6 years relevant work experience within direct or related field.
Group underwriting experience preferred.
