Summary Serves as Medical Technician within the Clinical Laboratory, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The position is that of a Medical Technician assigned to provide phlebotomy support for both in and outpatients at VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System. The incumbent will perform phlebotomy, accession specimens, and perform other procedures necessary to ensure appropriate specimen receipt, handling, and processing to ensure accurate, reliable laboratory results. Responsibilities Accessioning/Processing with Technical Duties Follows procedures for patient identification, sample procurement, and specimen labeling. The majority of the incumbent's day will be spent performing routine venipuncture specimen collections from inpatient, outpatients, and ambulatory inpatients. The incumbent will be required to proficiently collect these blood samples with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required resticks, and ·ensure that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay. The incumbent's productivity will be required to remain at a minimum of nine patients draws per hour. Performs phlebotomy using approved methodology for sample collection to include the importance of proper patient identification. Correct identification is critical to patient care. Misidentification could result in various degrees of patient harm, potentially leading to death. Properly identifies all patients with two identifiers to assure the accuracy of the specimen collected and documentation of the collection is appropriate. Follows the laboratory procedures for collecting specimens in the appropriate container, maintains specimen under appropriate conditions, follows guidelines for collecting timed specimens at the appropriate times to insure specimen viability. Prepares specimens for analysis, insuring that the physiological state of the specimen properties 1s maintained. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Controls sample physical conditions and responds to time factors to insure that the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained. Follows standard procedure and applies a practical knowledge of the properties of the specimens to ensure effective presentation of the qualities or characteristics critical for accurate testing or examination. Responsible for the preparation of samples for the reference laboratory. Preparing the samples, preparing the computerized requisition and preparing the sample for shipping. Instructs patient in the collection of urine for chain of custody (legal) urine drug screens. processes specimen and paperwork appropriately. The incumbent will be required to receive and sort specimens, check electronic orders for proper information, log in specimen, and deiiver specimens to various laboratory sections. The incumbent will be assigned to technical support tasks that include, but are not limited to: Preparation of samples for testing in the various clinical laboratory sections. such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting and aliquotting, etc. Distribution, storage and delivery of supplies and other materials used for the purpose of phlebotomy services. Cleaning and restocking the blood collection room and areas where collection trays and equipment are stored. Receiving phlebotomy requests utilizing both manual and computerized logging methods. Answers incoming calls for the laboratory service. Quickly finds and relays accurate information or refers the caller to technical personnel. Performs disposition of add-on orders. Recollection of patient specimens when determined by the medical technologists to be inadequate or insufficient to meet the test requirements. Collection of additional samples as required for the purpose of performing additional required testing. Uses and performs preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, refrigerators, and freezers. Performs work in the testing and examination procedures carried out in the laboratory. Prepares and processes samples, slides, smears, or other types of specimens (blood, urine) common to the laboratory. Performs standard diagnostic tests/procedures such as bleeding time, occult blood, urine dipstick, pregnancy test. fingerstick glucose; set up of microbiology cultures, venipuncture for collection of blood specimens, blood cultures. and therapeutic philebotomies. Performs instrument maintenance and quality control for these tests as needed or troubleshooting problems patients may experience. At this level, specialized experience should include experience performing a variety of relatively standardized tests, examinations, and determinations. The procedures and techniques are well-established but involve many meticulous sequential steps to complete a test; and following written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations.
