ESPN, Inc. Producer I, Global Production (Mandarin Speaking) in Topeka, Kansas

The International Productions Department leads productions for domestic and international sporting events and studio programs, and services our various channels, platforms, and partners around the world.

This Producer I, ESPN China position will primarily work on NBA game coverage in Mandarin Chinese for ESPN’s content output in China. This position will also periodically produce events and content for other domestic and global partners in English. The Producer I position will report to the Coordinating Producer. We are flexible to have this position located in any U.S. based location.

Responsibilities :

  • Produces content at NBA games with a bilingual reporter which includes but not limited to reporter standups, interviews, practice packages, and features for both taped and live use

  • Uses mastery of NBA knowledge and news judgment to determine the storyline and coverage plan for assigned NBA game

  • Communicates frequently with newsrooms in mandarin Chinese and English to discuss content ideas for the assigned NBA game

  • Works with assigned bilingual reporter in researching, preparing and reporting on news and feature elements relevant to the assigned game in both English and mandarin Chinese

  • Uses familiarity with the NBA fan base in China to suggest content that achieves the best reach on various platforms including Chinese social media

  • Utilizes a non-linear editing software to edit news packages and features in both English and mandarin Chinese

  • Translates an NBA feature from English to mandarin Chinese, and adds Chinese subtitles using a non-linear editing software

  • Uses a camera kit to shoot broll, interviews and reporter standups for taped or live use, and coordinates delivery of material utilizing feed, FTP or other means of transfer within deadline

  • Leads a small production team consists of Associate Producers and technical staff at an NBA game or other sporting events to create the most compelling content for NBA’s fans in China

  • Communicates with operations producers, assignment desk and news editors to book logistic options that are the most fiscally responsible while delivering the content with the time needed

  • Creates and adjusts assigned news stories and features to reach the largest possible number of viewers and to increase ESPN’s market penetration, ratings and viewership

  • Interacts with news sources, athletes, leagues and conference representatives and other news makers to gather information and insight for news stories

  • Provides additional content to support other initiatives, including various Chinese and US social media platforms

  • Adjust program content to accommodate breaking news situations; interprets breaking news and translates it into program content

  • Work is reviewed by the responsible Coordinating Producer at regular intervals and milestones

Basic Qualifications :

  • Strong organizational and communication skills in both mandarin Chinese and English

  • Strong bilingual mandarin Chinese and English speaking and writing skills

  • Deep knowledge of remote event production and strong video editing skill in a digital non-linear environment

  • Extensive knowledge of the NBA, and good understanding of other major US and international sports

  • Solid knowledge of the sports market in mainland China

  • Fluent in Weibo, wechat, twitter, Facebook, YouTube and a wide variety of social media websites in both mainland China and US

  • Minimum 4 years of progressively complex remote, studio or related sports production experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Is an experienced team player with good leadership skills

  • Flexible attitude towards constantly changing work conditions and environment

  • Has a good appreciation of popular culture, e.g., "what's cool" and assists with defining the tastes of ESPN's viewers.

  • Detailed technical knowledge required, must have knowledge of what "works" on television and what is realistic to accomplish in time allotted for show production.

  • Has a high level knowledge of real-time sports news production

Required Education :

  • Master’s degree in journalism, communications, online/multimedia or related field

Preferred Education :

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
