Reporting Relationship:Engineering Manager

Primary Accountability:

The Engineer Intern will be responsible for assisting with the design, coordination, overcurrent protection, voltage regulation, load balancing, planning, and troubleshooting of the Cooperative\'s electric power distribution and transmission system.

Major Duties:

  • Assists with ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable transmission, distribution, and substation design for new construction and modifications to existing facilities.
  • Assists the Engineering Manager with maintaining acceptable distribution system voltages through assessment, system improvements, and the application of voltage regulators, capacitors, and reactors as necessary.
  • Strives for practical distribution system load balancing through assessment and system reconfiguration.
  • Collaborates with the Engineering Manager to conduct system planning studies including load projections and modeling of the distribution system with Milsoft Widmil.
  • Supports the Engineering Manager in providing technical expertise to company personnel.
  • Participates in formulating and enforcing policies, standards and specifications.
  • Interprets plans, blue prints, safety orders, and government rules and regulations related to planning and engineering activities.
  • Assists Engineering Manager with load management and peak shaving generators.
  • Assists Engineering Manager with the development and maintenance of transmission and distribution construction standards and specifications.
  • Assists Engineering Manager with Work Order Inspections to ensure the construction of work orders complies with construction standards and specifications.
  • Assist Engineering Manager with Power Quality investigations.
  • Assists the Engineering Manager with meeting the requirements of a Government Utility Privatization Contract.

Qualifications:

  • A student studying engineering with an interest in electricity/power distribution from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology is required.
  • Valid Driver\'s License is required.
  • Intermediate knowledge and experience with the Microsoft Application Toolset (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.)
  • Basic understanding of electricity and the basics of power distribution.
  • A desire to develop a working knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and the National Electric Code.
  • A desire to learn about metering, including both AMI equipment and communications.
  • Must have or develop working knowledge of RUS construction specifications.
  • Must have or develop a working knowledge of RUS work order procedures.
  • Ability to analyze data or information by identifying the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information and using logic to address work-related issues and problems.
  • Ability to organize, multi-task, plan and set priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment with a strong attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of the Cooperative.
  • Demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy in daily interaction with members and cooperative staff.
  • Must handle confidential information with integrity.

Physical Demands:

  • Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Extended periods of computer use and moderate telephone and e-mail use.
  • Work outside in extreme temperatures in ic e, snow, rain, sun, high humidity, etc.
  • Must be able to walk a mile over uneven terrain, jump ditches, and any other requirement associated with power line construction and right-of-way clearing to observe work.
  • Ability to unpack and move supplies up to fifty (50) pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Professional and deadline-oriented environment involving both indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Interaction with staff and members.
  • Supervise and direct staff as assigned.
  • Must be able to report to their primary worksite after regular business hours, as soon as possible, in the event of an emergency situation such as electrical outages, inclement weather, etc.
