Under general supervision, responsible for writing technical copy for various operation and maintenance manuals and technical publications. Prepares outline of contents and written text. Coordinates layout and organization of manuals and other documents. Interprets necessary data, drawings, and specifications through research and liaison with technical staff. May direct lower level writers and coordinate efforts of editors and illustrators. Requires working knowledge of organization product line(s), customer requirements, purpose and structure of document, and user's level of understanding.

Basic Function

The Technical Writer supports and enhances knowledge and learning activities by developing knowledge articles, videos, training content, e-learning and other various content for internal and external usage.

This position is directly involved in providing knowledge and learning to clients, partners, and internal employees by creating and maintaining high quality and effective knowledge and learning content. Wolters Kluwer is a knowledge intensive organization and quality content is critical to its mission.

The Technical Writer is also responsible for maintaining positive relationships with product teams and subject experts, organizing and maintaining content, managing multiple projects, coordinating with and communicating with various teams, as well as completion of any related projects assigned by the Knowledge and Learning Manager.

Essential Duties and responsibilities

  • Take an active role in promoting knowledge and content management practices by actively engaging in coaching others, reviewing and scoring content, and communicating results to management;

  • Collaborate with Content team to maintain overall knowledge quality (finability, usability, timeliness);

  • Design and develop online, and other related, content for specific learning programs related to products, process, and procedures;

  • Prepare and update knowledge base articles, product manuals, and other supporting documents;

  • Coordinate with subject matter experts to ensure that content meets stated objectives and standards;

  • Determine current knowledge and learning assets before contributing to content development;

  • Collaborate with others in the organization to create/update knowledge and learning content to improve and enhance sharing of knowledge within Service Excellence and other Wolters Kluwer business units;

  • Analyzes departmental needs and identifies knowledge and/or gaps to develop and deliver content;

  • Facilitates distribution of content in live and virtual sessions; monitors, evaluates, or records content effectiveness;

  • Receive work requests from intra and inter departmental staff, complete in a timely manner, review/proofread own and other’s work to ensure quality;

  • Receive and understand feedback from subject matter experts on the content of your work;

  • Actively participate in own career development and continuous improvement

  • Partner with HR & Managers to develop and manage a certification process that aligns with our job levels and functions;

  • Executes on processes or projects within a defined function;

  • Responsible for Intra-departmental coordination to ensure completion of assigned tasks;

  • Manage small to medium project efforts; organization, process flowing, task completion

  • Identify, resolve, and escalate issues when necessary

  • Identify root causes in trends and patterns and provide potential solutions; identify and document trends regarding reoccurring issues.

  • Provide general reporting on data/status to management as requested; document activities and progress on initiatives

  • Support co-workers and promote a positive work environment.

  • Secure and keep confidential product and customer data.

Job Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree, or related field or equivalent experience


  • Preferably in Business, Education


  • 2+ experience with eLearning/content development, knowledge management or training design preferred

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications: (First list requirements, followed by preferences.)

  • Documented ability in developing eLearning, using Adobe Captivate, and working within learning management systems.

  • Experience implementing or working in/with KCS methodology to create and management shared content.

  • Experience creating learning content that will be delivered in class or online.

  • Experience mentoring and coaching others.

  • Demonstrates excellent written, verbal communication skills

  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Intermediate to advanced skills in training design software: Captivate, Storyboard, Camtasia, SnagIt

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

  • Working in a fast paced, changing environment.

  • Utilizing highly developed communication skills, including both excellent verbal skills and accurate written communication.

  • Is persistent in overcoming challenges to accomplish goals

  • Awareness of the larger business conditions that will impact day-to-day work.

  • Ideal candidates would demonstrate an ability to making a difference daily, upholding commitments, being curious for knowledge, speaking up and sparking innovation.

  • Advanced Desktop and mobile computing skills

  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills.
