Position Specific Responsibilities

The Heartland Environmental Justice Center (HEJC) at Wichita State University supports individuals and organizations who serve in communities experiencing environmental injustice across Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and adjoining Indigenous Nations. TheHEJChelps a variety of audiences identify and pursue sources of funding and other innovative pathways to improving environmental conditions and engaging communities in environmental decision-making processes. Community Engagement Coordinators live and work in the community they support, building on existing relationships with community members and organizations to help identify local EJ concerns and needs and to connect the community to resources available through theHEJC. This position will support Tribal Nations, Indigenous-led community-based organizations, and organizations supporting Tribal and Indigenous communities throughout the region.\ \

Community Engagement Coordinators:

  • Serve as a liaison betweenHEJCstaff and partners and the community they serve.
  • Identify potential program participants eligible for services.
  • Develop relationships with community leaders and organizations.
  • Promote opportunities available through the Center.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for environmental and energy justice concerns in the community.
  • Coordinate logistics and promotion of Center-sponsored activities.
  • Assist with planning initiatives and establishing, monitoring, and reporting on performance indicators.

Summary of Responsibilities

Assists in the management of community engagement events or programs. Develops and manages partnerships with community members to support program.

Essential Functions

Assists in the development and coordination of community events that promote and build program engagement.\ Develops and manages volunteer relationships to support department events and customer service resources.\ Communicates with and develops customer relationships with businesses and community members.\ Develops relationships with relevant community groups and creates tactical partnerships. Connects resources to community needs through partner organizations by building lasting and reciprocal relationships.\ Tracks program participation and financial data, and provides reports as needed.

Requirements

Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent by hire date

Preferred Education

Minimum Experience

Two (2) years of experience in program and event coordination or related field

Preferred Experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Understanding of environmental justice and/or energy justice issues experienced in Tribal Communities
