Design Lead Engineer



Textron Aviation is hiring engineers to support the company eAviation team in researching advanced aviation technologies such as electrification and autonomy. The eAviation team is working to develop systems and aircraft to enter existing and new cargo and passenger aviation markets. This work will require employees to be flexible to adapt for changing technology and end markets.

The design lead engineer must be familiar with metallic and composite structure to guide design team in the development of an advanced technology aircraft. The design lead is responsible working with the Integrated Product Team(IPT) to design a structure that will meet Part 23/27 criteria, meet customer mission requirements, and minimize weight while bringing experience to reduce design iterations and enable innovation. The design lead will ensure drawings follow Textron Aviation (TA) engineering requirements and are stored correctly in the Catia environment. The work environment will utilize a fast-paced team that offers multi-disciplinary experience.


  1. Guide a team of design engineers that will perform layout and detail design of structure for an electric tiltrotor.

  2. Conduct trade studies to determine optimum spacing and size and type of material for spars, ribs, skins, frames, stringers, windows, doors, motor mounts and landing gear.

  3. Work with Manufacturing to develop methods of tooling for composite parts.

  4. Maintain a schedule and track drawing release to meet manufacturing need dates.

  5. Ensure the design team follows TA procedures for drawings and Catia V6.

  6. Review and approve drawings for group lead.

  7. Guide design of test articles.



  • Bachelor’s Degree is required. Major in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering is preferred. Bachelor’s Degree in Physics will be considered.

  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience or relative aviation technical or systems experience.


  • Relevant industry experience relating to structural layout and design.

  • Experience with composite and metallic repair methods required.

  • Strong computer, written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Familiarity with 14 CFR Part 23, 25, 27, and/or 29 for commercial and military qualification and certification of aircraft systems desired.

  • Experience with mechanical systems integration, development, and testing desired.

  • Experience with Catia V6 required.

  • Must be experienced with Word and Excel software.
