VMware Director Hybrid Platform Services - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Wichita, Kansas

Team Overview:

The VMware Hybrid Platform and Services team is driving VMware’s vision toward the SaaS journey by taking the core vSphere product to Subscription. We are a 150+person engineering team across the US, Bulgaria, and India and continue to grow aggressively. The team has long had a strong presence in the US, leading back to its days as CPBU working on the core VC platform. Starting with its capabilities in the VC core platform, the US team has grown strong teams in the management plane, Identity, and Platform which helps connect on-prem vSphere to Cloud (aka Cloud Services Gateway). With that, the US team will be positioned with all the skills needed to drive and own the key Platform initiatives. Expected outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing:

Within 30 days, you will have a good understanding of the high-level business goals, the technology, and the India-based personnel across manager and IC roles. You will begin to serve as the point of contact for US engineering for Hybrid Platform capabilities in US.

Within 60 days, you will define what the “next level” for Hybrid Platform Engineering team looks like and present a plan for how the team gets to that level. Additionally, you will have established rapport with support/Operations and cloud Services teams based in India, the US, and Bulgaria as well as their global counterparts. You will be a key member of the extended Hybrid Platform/services leadership team.

Within three months, you will have developed a full understanding of the business strategy, operations, and of course technology to effectively represent the Platform team at the US leadership table. You will have established your leadership within the team and begun to drive impactful long-term projects, products, or services that are being developed with teams that may span both India and the US.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As a leader in Engineering, you will:

Manage headcount, budget, hiring, and onboarding

Grow leaders along the managerial and IC tracks

Bring clarity and reduce uncertainty in complex projects and people situations

Role model the behaviors and mindsets needed to drive our SaaS transformation

Required Qualifications:

15+ years of software development and management experience combined.

BS/MS in Computer Science.

Experience working in cloud technologies, Building resilient platforms, and SaaS/Subscription products is a plus.

Full working knowledge of software engineering principles, design patterns, and commercial product development practices in complex larger enterprise/cloud solutions.

Service ownership mindset a must

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

Hard-working with a "whatever it takes" attitude.

Able to demonstrate effective teamwork both within the immediate team and across teams.

Excellent communications skills and able to lead a team of highly technical individuals.

You have a collaborative approach and are self-motivated.

The hiring manager for this role is the Head of vSphere+/Arctic Engineering and is chartered to deliver on an ambitious product agenda and SaaS transformation across vSphere. In this group, we strive to empower our high-caliber and highly motivated team to deliver on our agenda with a clear strategy and low-friction processes. While we have a lot of work to do in this area, we have the right mindset and team to tackle the challenge. The team is geographically distributed and remote-friendly, although we are all still learning about how best to be productive and effective when we often haven’t met our colleagues face to face! The team still retains a lot of its start-up roots of being scrappy and agile but is now balancing that with the expectations and needs of large banks, retailers, and other such customers who demand stability, quality, and predictability.

Location -> This role can be based anywhere in the US while most of the development team is located in Palo Alto.
