KSNW is looking for a dynamic journalist who thrives on breaking news, enterprise stories, and aggressive coverage to join our team as a full-time assignment editor. The ideal candidate understands how to cover spot news with urgency and attention to detail, and has an understanding of cross-platform, multi-media coverage. Must have excellent news judgment and instincts, with the ability to find stories that will help make our newscasts unique and distinctive. You should be a highly motivated, very organized, multi-tasker. You should be a good communicator with people in the newsroom and crews in the field. You should be a natural leader who can instantly take charge during breaking news. A curious mind, investigational skills and the ability to dig deeper into a story is essential.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Tracks stories from all sources including government agencies, emergency scanners, wire services and community groups
Dispatches photographers, reporters, and other personnel to cover stories
Coordinates logistics for news personnel
Participates in daily story meetings and supplies a comprehensive list of all possible news stories and works with the News Director and news management to develop plans for all broadcasts
Assists in development, planning and follow-up of all news stories
Keeps newsroom informed of story developments throughout day
Interacts with viewers/users via phone, email and social media sites
Could be asked to write stories for the web and other digital platforms
Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements & Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
Fluency in English, bilingual Spanish a plus
Must have superior organizational skills
Must be able to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks
Must be able to make decisions and take a leadership role
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Experience in news operations preferred
Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment
Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Flexibility to work evening and other shifts as assigned
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The Assignment Editor I, must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. In addition, the Assignment Editor I, must be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
