Distinguishing Features of Work

The Department of Public Works and Utilities Engineering Division oversees more than \$100 million annually in public improvement projects. Engineers are employed in three different divisions:\ \ Construction Engineers in the Construction Division are responsible for ensuring all projects are built according to City specifications and in a timely manner. Field engineers make independent decisions as issues arise, track progress on projects, and provide direction as needed.\ \ Design Engineers in the Design Division review plans submitted to the City by private consulting firms to ensure compliance with City specifications. Design engineers also perform cost estimates, consultant selection, work with utilities, and many other project management functions.\ \ Traffic Engineers in the Traffic Division handle issues such as traffic signal timing, setting speed limits, analyzing requests for stop signs and crosswalks, traffic counts, and more. These engineers also review plans for reconstructing intersections and new traffic signals.\ \ This Construction Division position is entry-level work in civil engineering which requires the application of professional skill and knowledge to solve difficult problems. Work involves coordinating contracted public infrastructure projects, which generally includes supervision of project inspectors and managing project budgets. Projects generally include construction of sanitary sewers, water mains, storm sewers, site grading, street pavement, and sidewalk. Work is directed and reviewed through the establishment of goals and subsequent evaluation progress toward goal attainments. Examples of Work Performed

  • Supervises technical and non-technical employees on public infrastructure projects.
  • Ensures conformity of construction work with plans, specifications, standards, and policies and assists in resolving construction problems.
  • Monitors project budgets and schedules through completion of construction.
  • Conducts preconstruction conferences.
  • Conducts site reviews of the progress of construction projects.
  • Approves partial payments, change orders, and final payments for projects.
  • Resolves problems with contractors, citizens, and inspectors.
  • Completion of work assignments will require operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work

  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of professional civil or mechanical engineering
  • Knowledge of techniques applied to the construction and maintenance of public improvement projects.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain, ascend and descend steps or a ladder, and tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated with construction sites.
  • Ability to lean and reach as needed to read and interpret plans and specifications from a print that may be as large as 36 by 48 inches with information printed as small as twenty characters per inch.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orall and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training

  • A Bachelors degree in civil or mechanical engineering, with a preference for the civil discipline, or the candidate will complete a bachelor\'s degree in one of these specified areas within the next year.Degree must be from an ABET accredited university.
  • Passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam or registration as Intern Engineer (IE) preferred
  • Must have a valid driver\'s license.
  • Candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
