Universal Engineering Sciences Environmental Scientist in Wichita, Kansas

Under the general direction of the Environmental Manager, this role independently applies professional knowledge and experience to complete NEPA-related projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Approach technical work with competence and safety in mind.

  • Display maturity in decision-making.

  • Perform technical work related to NEPA and Wetland projects independently, with support from other environmental staff.

  • Coordinate environmental permitting and determinations through state and federal agencies.

  • Conduct fieldwork, including sampling water, soil, flora, and fauna identification.

  • Conduct habitat assessments and monitoring activities.

  • Provide field oversight and data collection on projects across the Midwest region.

  • Prepare reports and proposals for routine projects and assist senior staff with reports and proposals.

  • Provide prompt insight to the Environmental Manager and/or other Project Managers regarding technical, managerial, or administrative challenges that arise during projects.

  • Communicate technical aspects of projects with client representatives, regulatory agencies, and other project team members as a fully qualified professional.

  • Project a positive attitude and company image of GSI Engineering/UES in dealings with outside groups and clients.

  • Complete project assignments on time and within budget considerations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological, Ecological, Geological, or a related natural/environmental science.

  • Willingness to accept out-of-town assignments, typically two weeks a year.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience completing Categorical Exclusions (CE), Environmental Assessments (EA), and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), and obtaining Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) determinations under NEPA.

  • Additionally, experience with the following NEPA-related environmental tasks (field and reporting) is preferred:

  • Phase I Environmental Site Assessments

  • Wetlands/Waters of the United States assessment (with assistance from a wetland sub consultant, if needed)

  • Threatened/endangered species assessments.

  • Solid waste/hazardous and toxic substance assessment

  • Federal, state, and local permitting research and assessment

  • Alternatives Analysis collaboration

  • WOTUS Mitigation
