Newman University Graduate Assistant for Residence Life in Wichita, Kansas

Position to start August 2024. Open until filled.

Occupational Summary:

This is a 12-month, live-in position that reports directly to the Director of Residence Life. The Graduate Assistant for Residence Life will aid the Director with administration and supervision of residence halls, residence life programming, Resident Assistants (RAs), and coordinating summer conferences. They will work actively with the Director and RAs to create environments that enhance the academic and personal growth of students. This position requires evening meetings, hall/campus events, and scheduled office hours in addition to on-call responsibilities, responding to crisis situations or emergencies, and assisting, as necessary.

Work Performed:

  • Aid in the supervision and mentoring of Resident Assistants (RAs), ensuring the prompt completion of all administrative responsibilities .

  • Attend and lead regular weekly meetings with RAs to discuss hall business and issue campus-wide information .        

  • Oversee and support program activities in the halls .

  • Co-advise the Residence Hall Association and supervise officers .

  • Be familiar with NU (Newman University) Residence Life policies and aid the Director with their enforcement .

  • Aid students with academic, social, or personal concerns .

  • Manage the on-call phone after hours as scheduled .

  • Coordinate with the Director of Residence Life to respond to maintenance needs in the buildings .

  • Encourage self-responsibility and promote consideration and respect among and between all residents .

  • Maintain and respect issues of confidentiality .

  • Work cooperatively with all university departments.

  • Complete all University-required trainings including Title IX and FERPA.

  • Contribute to the overall success of Residence Life by performing all other duties as assigned and appropriate to the position.

    Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:

  • Completion of Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Must be accepted and enrolled full time (at least six (6) credit hours per semester) in a Master’s degree program during the academic year (fall and spring semester). 

  • Experience in residence life and/or student leadership including previous experience in programming for college students, orientation or similar leadership experience .

  • Experience living or working in a residence hall, peer counselor, or campus/student leadership position(s) .

  • Ability to exercise basic human relations skills in directing and motivating staff, and dealing with varied constituencies on and off campus.

  • Strong organizational and computer skills.

  • AED and/or CPR training preferred.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

    Compensation:

  • This is a 12-month live-in position. Contract must be renewed each year.

  • $2,000.00 stipend paid over 12 months.

  • Apartment-style room and free cable and internet access through the campus network.

  • Board (meals only offered when dining hall is open for traditional students).

  • Eligible for fall, spring, and summer tuition waiver. The student is responsible for payment of books, general fees, parking, and living expenses. Must follow tuition waiver policy and submittal deadlines.

    Additional Information:

  • Graduate Assistant for Residence Life may not hold other full-time employment.  Other part-time employment in or outside the University must receive prior approval from the Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life. 

  • Tuition remission scholarships are dependent upon enrollment in the course(s) by regular, tuition-paying students. The university reserves the right to move classes from the face-to-face modality to the online modality in order to ensure a reasonable minimum class size is met, at the sole discretion of the university. Tuition remission scholarships do not guarantee that any course will be available in any given modality, depending upon enrollment. If space is limited in any class, persons using any tuition benefit scholarships may be enrolled in the order in which they registered for the class.

  • As a condition for retention in the role, the Graduate Assistant must remain in good academic standing, which is a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.

  • A criminal background check will be performed prior to employment offer.
