The Health Communications Coordinator is an exempt professional position in the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) that performs a variety of functions related to internal and external communications. This position provides clear, constant, and timely communication for the community. The position coordinates the creation and distribution of communications materials, manages the SCHD website, coordinates meetings and agendas for the Administrative Management Team (AMT) of the Department of Public Services, coordinates special projects for DPS, and other administrative duties. The position participates in community collaborations that support the work of the department as needed. The position writes and edits communications materials and ensures communication is effective, equitable, and understandable to reach all communities in Sedgwick County.




Coordinate the creation and distribution of communications materials for SCHD


+ Work with SCHD staff, County Strategic Communications staff, Print Shop, and vendors to coordinate the creation of signage, flyers, brochures, ads and other communications materials


+ Draft press releases and/or review press releases written by SCHD staff and County Strategic Communications


+ Develop, prepare and edit Annual Reports for SCHD and COMCARE


+ Actively participate in emergency response meetings and proactively create and implement risk communications strategies based on current and future anticipated emergency response situations




Manage the SCHD website


+ Serve as a point of contact for the SCHD website


+ Work with County webmaster, supervisor, and SCHD staff to update the SCHD website in accordance with procedure, website standards, and SCHD and community needs




Assist Department of Public Services (DPS)


+ Participate on DPS, County and community agency teams and committees


+ Coordinate and provide training for DPS programs


+ Coordinate and monitor DPS program participation in community fairs and tabling events


+ Prepare budget PowerPoint presentations




Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in English, public health, school and community health education, communication, management, or related field. At least one semester of a college-level public speaking or communications class. One year of work experience communicating with the public through writing in marketing, communications or other work. One year of work experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. One year of project management work experience. One year of customer service experience. Or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Ability to adapt quickly to new projects or research topics, and to organize and interpret data. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insur ance. In order to comply with the requirements of the federal health care staff COVID-19 vaccination mandate, all employees of COMCARE and the Health Department must be fully vaccinated. All offers of employment are contingent upon submission of vaccination documentation prior to start date.




Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in English, public health, school and community health education, communication, management, or related field. Three to five years of experience in a public or nonprofit organization; experience in short and long-term project coordination, and/or grant writing. Three years of work experience communicating with the public through writing in marketing, communications or other work. Knowledge of performance outcomes and outcome measurement systems. Broad knowledge base of community programs and agencies and experience working with community agencies. Work experience in a public health agency, hospital or other medical-related setting. Work experience with risk communications or public health emergency preparedness.
