Distinguishing Features of Work

This is work that may include some supervisory duties. Employees perform a variety of mechanical and building trade tasks. Although performance of skilled work is required in many of the repairs made, skills required in any one type of trade are usually less than would be required of a journeyman in that field. Work differs between positions, but in most cases primary emphasis is upon mechanical ability and skills as applied to the department\'s maintenance activities. Work is performed independently, but frequently is inspected upon completion.

Days and Hours: Monday - Friday 6:30am - 3:00pm\ Bargaining Unit: Service Employee\'s International (SEIU)\ **Employees within the department or division shall be given first consideration**

Examples of Work Performed
  • Inspects machinery and playground equipment to locate need for repair work.
  • Lubricates machinery and playground equipment.
  • Performs safety audits on playground equipment and playground systems.
  • Repairs various types of small stationary or portable mechanical equipment.
  • Repairs and/or fabricates parts needed for proper equipment operation.
  • Maintains inventory of routinely used maintenance and repair materials.
  • May operate light equipment such as loaders or fork?lifts.
  • May supervise helpers or relieve a supervisor of a crew.
  • Prepares documentation of safety audits and inspections.
  • Completion of work assignments requires operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in playground repairs and operation
  • Working knowledge of playground construction and building equipment operation
  • Knowledge of work hazards and ability to take necessary safety precautions in compliance with CPSC and ASTM guidelines
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and field drawings
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Ability to work in equipment pits
  • Ability to bend, twist and reach as necessary to repair equipment
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances associated with machine exhaust and open grounds, and heavy machinery noise (with the use of ear plugs)
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds
  • Ability to exert up to 100 lbs. of pressure using tolls
  • Ability to weld to repair and fabricate parts
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to acquire and maintain status as a Certified Playground Safety Inspector
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Class A Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Four years of experience as a skilled worker in building and mechanical repair work, or applicable documented playground training, including welding training and/or experience required.
  • National Recreation and Park Association certificated as a Playground Safety Institute certification (CPSI) is preferred at hire but required within 6 months of hire.
  • Two years of supervisory experience required four years preferred.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
