Distinguishing Features of Work

This work involves the maintenance and repair of streets, equipment, buildings, and grounds. Employees will work individually, with a co-worker, or with a crew, performing skilled maintenance tasks, with varying degrees of difficulty. The emphasis of the job is being able to perform a variety of tasks utilizing general mechanical ability. Work will be inspected, and evaluated during and after completion, by supervision.\ \ The day and hours for this position is: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm\ Bargaining Unit: Service Employee\'s International (SEIU)

Examples of Work Performed
  • Performs work involving the installation and maintenance of pavement markings.
  • Performs work involving the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, and traffic control devices.
  • Performs work assisting co-workers, or crew involving the installation and or maintenance of traffic signs, signals, and markings.
  • Performs work legibly documenting tasks utilizing paperwork forms, and computer data entry.
  • Performs work individually, with a co-worker, or with a crew, involving the maintenance of equipment utilized in the job operations.
  • Performs work involving a variety of equipment and tools, both manual, and powered. Including electric, battery, air, and hydraulic powered tools.
  • Performs work doing remedial custodial, and grounds repair with any needed equipment.
  • Performs work operating a variety of vehicles from light pickup trucks to heavy equipment such as dump trucks attached with snow removal equipment.
  • These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive, and the City reserves the right to assign other related duties as needed.
Requirements of Work
  • Working knowledge of basic computer skills for record keeping.
  • Working knowledge and ability to understand directions verbally, and from written instructions, including but not limited to, work orders, requests, sketches, and blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to distinguish colors, and shapes accurately.
  • Ability to develop and maintain proficient working relationships with co-workers, and employees of the City, as well as external personnel such as contractors, vendors, and citizens.
  • Working knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards, and safety precautions related to maintenance work.
  • Ability to safely operate hand, and powered tools related to maintenance work.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to occupational nuisances associated with working in high traffic volume work zones.
  • Ability to safely work in and around high traffic volume work zones.
  • Ability to safely climb stairs, ladders, and bend, twist, and reach as necessary to complete required tasks.
  • Ability to safely maneuver into, and or on, a wide variety of vehicles and or equipment.
  • Ability to lift safely and independently, and carry bulky items weighing up to 90 pounds, or with assistance of another person up to 300 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement and sometimes extreme weather conditions including but not limited to, rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, humidity, and low visibility conditions due to low light, or bright light.
  • This position will require working outdoors in inclement weather including but not limited to, rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity plus snow and ice removal and/or mergency response operations that may include operating equipment and vehicles on overnight shifts, weekends and in low-light and low visibility conditions, or other adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to work emergency response operations that could involve but are not limited to some of the adverse weather conditions that were listed above. These operations may include 12 hour rotating shifts, overnight shifts, weekend shifts, and holiday shifts.
  • Must have a valid driver\'s license.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver License with an Tanker, and Air Brake endorsement within 60 days of hire.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals internally or externally.
Required Experience and Training

Six months of experience in general maintenance, and repair skills involved with construction, mechanical, or streets and grounds maintenance is required.

Must have a valid driver\'s license at time of hire.

A valid Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker and Air Brake endorsement is required within 60 days of hire.
