Distinguishing Features of Work

This is work in the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment. These employees perform independent, semiskilled maintenance tasks or assist skilled workers in the performance of difficult maintenance work. The primary emphasis of the job is on the performance of a variety of tasks which require general mechanical ability rather than a high degree of skill in any particular trade. Work is supervised and inspected while in process and upon completion by a supervisor.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Performs semiskilled building or equipment maintenance tasks, such as making minor repairs to chairs, flooring, and windows, or to lawn care equipment.
  • Performs building and equipment maintenance duties including rough carpentry and plumbing work, plastering and cement work, painting and minor electrical repair work.
  • Makes boxes, forms, and frames, and performs other semiskilled carpentry tasks.
  • May perform some routine custodial duties and/or grounds maintenance tasks, which may include brush and snow removal, and operating power mowers, edgers, irrigation equipment, and related devices.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.
  • Assists with prescribed burns.

Requirements of Work
  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in various types of maintenance work
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment
  • Ability to interpret and work from rough sketches and penciled layouts
  • Ability to use hand tools, portable power tools, and equipment needed in building or equipment maintenance and repair work
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders; to bend, twist, reach and crawl as necessary to repair equipment
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky items, weighing up to 80 pounds (ability to carry heavier loads with the assistance of another person); load repair equipment and materials onto a hand truck and move where needed
  • Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist
  • Ability to tolerate minor exposure to chemicals used in building or equipment maintenance and repair; airborne environmental nuisances associated with machine exhaust and open grounds; and machinery noise (with the use of ear plugs)
  • May require ability to keep clear and detailed records of work performed
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, and representatives of other organizations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas class B commercial driver\'s license with air brake endorsement. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country

  • Six months of experience in performing semiskilled building, mechanical, construction, or grounds maintenance tasks.

  • Ability to acquireavalid Kansas Class B commercial driver\'s license (CDL) with air brake endorsementwithin six months of employment. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience and Training

  • A valid Kansas Class B commercial driver\'s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
