Martin Defense Group, a privately-owned defense contractor, is seeking a Marine Systems Scientist. The incumbent will join a group of talented Engineers, Scientist, and Innovators with tremendous top-side potential devoted to solving novel technological problems with national defense implications in the fields of Cybersecurity, Autonomy, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Naval Architecture among others. This position can be located in any of our offices, with preference being the Portland, ME, South Kingstown, RI, or Honolulu, HI locations. General Description:

The ideal candidate will have a M.S. or PhD. in the field of Ocean/Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture with a focus on numerical hydrodynamics. The individual will develop and conduct complex hydrodynamic simulations of ocean systems and develop formulations and software to capture the salient physics of such problems. Strong software development experience for physics-based modeling is highly desired. The candidate will be asked to solve technically challenging problems, to conduct state of the art engineering simulations and to work with a team to develop virtual environments for system validation and control system training. Familiarity with marine vehicles and analysis software, such as Aegir, LAMP, Star-CCM, Open Foam, Matlab, and Rhino is highly desired, as well as a familiarity with marine propulsion, stability, seakeeping, and control. Strong engineering fundamentals, excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment are required to be successful in this position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop physics-based models of marine systems including hydrodynamic formulations, rigid body motions, and representations of systems and sensors

  • Validate models against real-world data and tests

  • Develop interfaces with other physics models and control systems, some of which may be with external industry partners

  • Develop, troubleshoot, and configuration manage engineering software as part of a team

  • Assist in report writing and presentations

  • Assist in developing proposals for new business and applications

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in development of marine systems modeling and simulation

  • PhD in Marine engineering, ocean engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, or other similar field from an accredited institution is highly desired

  • BS and MS degrees in the above fields will also be considered with demonstrated relevant experience

  • Strong fundamentals in marine engineering, naval architecture, rigid body dynamics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and 1st principles physics-based mathematical models

  • Experience with fluid-structure interaction problems is highly desirable

  • Proficiency with common engineering simulation languages, such as C++, Fortran, Matlab, and/or Simulink

  • Understanding of control systems is desirable

  • String data analysis skills

  • Familiarity with marine model testing procedures and data processing

  • Familiarity with common techniques for both reduced-order modeling and high-fidelity solvers

  • Experience with CAD modeling software and techniques (Rhino, Solidworks)

  • Strong software configuration management and troubleshooting skills

  • Possess an interest in learning new concepts and applying them to solve problems.

  • Good attitude; must be a team player, but also efficient working individually

  • Able to demonstrate initiative and possess time management skills to meet deadlines
