This engineer role will be a member of the vRealize Network Insight (vRNI) team, which is part of the Modern Application and Management Business Group. In vRNI, we are transforming management, operations, and security for the Software Defined Data Center (SDDC). This platform helps IT organizations plan, operate, visualize, analyze, and fix their complex software-defined data center and cloud environments. The product, built on advanced technology pioneered by startups Arkin and Veriflow, has won numerous industry awards including Gartner Cool Vendor. Our team is building a large scale distributed real time operations and analytics platform with enterprise grade reliability. You get to work with a talented team of peers in the domains of networking and security, distributed systems, data analytics pipelines, ML and AI, REST APIs, and user interfaces delivering insights from complex data. We are involved in every aspect of the product development process, from early feature concept design to product development to testing and validation at customer sites. What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

The following is a schedule for the first year of joining:

  • Within 15 days of employment, become competent with VMware’s rules, guidelines and standard operating procedures. Go through the new hire orientation and trainings.

  • Within 1 month of employment, get hands-on with the product and its use-cases.

  • Within 3 months of employment, learn the product area assigned to you in detail, the technology stack in use, become familiar with the project and features in the assigned domain, and get accustomed to the code base, release cycles etc.

  • Within 6 months of employment, work towards becoming competent in coding and functional dev testing of the product.

  • Within 1 year of employment, work towards becoming competent in handling engineering design, coding, reviews, functional automation of dev test of the products feature. [GB1]

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As a software development engineer, you will:

  • Work as a member of a back-end team developing novel distributed systems and algorithms for near-real-time analysis of large-scale cloud networks and software-defined data centers.

  • Research, design and implement industry best practices to provision, maintain and monitor cloud environments.

  • Work on product feature engineering design, coding, review, testing, automation, and debugging.

  • Collaborate with back-end, front-end, and platform infrastructure teams, as well as product managers, customers, and support, to create an optimized and usable platform.

  • Work closely with a team of passionate people with a startup mindset and who want to change the status quo.

  • Work with teams across multiple sites and geographies as a collaborator and partner.

  • Have a customer focus to ensure high quality solutions are delivered which meet the expectations of our customers and be able to work with other customer-facing teams to ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction.

  • Plan the scope of complex, large features which may span across multiple teams and be delivered in multiple release cycles.

  • Operate with a service ownership mindset to work in a DevOps mode where the dev team is responsible for all automation, quality, CI/CD, logging, and monitoring of services that are being built.

  • Work in a fast-paced environment where priorities and direction may change rapidly to keep pace with customer requirements and market directions.

As a software development engineer, you will:

Required Qualifications

  • You are fluent in back-end software development with Java.You are familiar with the use of common open source software packages.

  • You have clear, concise communication skills to articulate your thought process, design tradeoffs, and decisions to a team of highly technical individuals.

  • You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

  • You adopt a "whatever it takes" attitude and work effectively both within the immediate team and across teams.

Desired Qualifications

  • You have an undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.

  • You have experience with distributed systems, networking, algorithms, or machine learning.

  • You are familiar with cloud computing technologies and data center concepts such as infrastructure as code, virtualization, networking, and security.

  • You are familiar with agile/SCRUM development methodologies.

  • You are passionate about the quality of your code and understand test-driven development and unit testing.

The vRealize Network Insight team came to VMware through the acquisition of a startup, and grew organically from a small group to a 100+ person engineering team. It’s a fast-paced and innovative environment where the team works with co-founders to accomplish the vision. The team is built on trust and empathy, and we celebrate each other’s successes. vRNI is headed by Shiv Agarwal, who is the Vice President and GM of the group, and is based in Palo Alto, California. The engineering team is distributed across India and the U.S. In this role, you will be joining the U.S.-based team.

Where is the role located?

This role is based in the U.S. Our offices are in Palo Alto, CA. There is an option to work remotely.
