As a Network Engineer for the City of Wichita, you\'ll be at the heart of planning, designing, and analyzing our data communications networks. Examples of Work Performed
- Performs the installation, configuration and ongoing maintenance of networked information systems.
- Tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.
- Handles technical issues and major incidents through hands-on troubleshooting.
- Supports, maintains and monitors internal and external networks.
- Implements and manages network configurations and related security.
- Resolves network performance issues and establishes a disaster recovery plan. Installs upgrades and patches.
- Performs system backups and recovery. Monitors system configuration and maintains data files.
- Recommends upgrades, new applications, and equipment.
- Provides technical support and guidance to users.
- Relies on limited knowledge and professional discretion to achieve goals.
- Works under general supervision though some ingenuity and flexibility is required.
- Should be familiar with scripting languages such as Ruby and Python.
Requirements of Work
Thorough knowledge of LAN/WAN data and voice transmission methods and means
Considerable knowledge of large scale network hardware, software, LAN/WAN technologies, virtualization and wireless data communications
Ability to gather proper data for analysis for problem resolution
Ability to analyze documents, files and reports related to work flow
Ability to quickly and effectively communicate with vendors and non-technical staff
Ability to identify and incorporate technology that provides value towards attaining organizational goals
Thorough knowledge of project management to plan, evaluate and implement projects across departmental lines
Ability to develop return on investment calculations for technology investments
Ability to effectively plan, organize and supervise the work of others
Ability to provide lower level staff or subordinates with effective training and growth opportunities
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license

Required Experience and Training
Re quired Experience and Training
- At least 2 years of college education in computer science, information technology or telecommunications
- A valid drivers license required.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
Preferred Experience and Training
- A bachelors degree in computer science, Information Technology or Telecommunications.
- 1 year of hands-on experience with network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other networking devices. This experience should involve direct work in designing, installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and optimizing network systems.
- Certifications in Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or CompTIA Network+.
