Distinguishing Features of Work

As a Network Engineer for the City of Wichita, you\'ll be at the heart of planning, designing, and analyzing our data communications networks. You will have the opportunity to shape and implement both internal and external network solutions that directly impact the efficiency and security of our city\'s operations. Your role will involve leveraging your expertise in LAN/WAN systems to develop robust network architectures and provide expert technical support. Examples of Work Performed
  • Performs the installation, configuration and ongoing maintenance of networked information systems.
  • Tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.
  • Handles technical issues and major incidents through hands-on troubleshooting.
  • Supports, maintains and monitors internal and external networks.
  • Implements and manages network configurations and related security.
  • Resolves network performance issues and establishes a disaster recovery plan. Installs upgrades and patches.
  • Performs system backups and recovery. Monitors system configuration and maintains data files.
  • Recommends upgrades, new applications, and equipment.
  • Provides technical support and guidance to users.
  • Relies on limited knowledge and professional discretion to achieve goals.
  • Works under general supervision though some ingenuity and flexibility is required.
  • Should be familiar with scripting languages such as Ruby and Python.
Requirements of Work
  • Thorough knowledge of LAN/WAN data and voice transmission methods and means

  • Considerable knowledge of large scale network hardware, software, LAN/WAN technologies, virtualization and wireless data communications

  • Ability to gather proper data for analysis for problem resolution

  • Ability to analyze documents, files and reports related to work flow

  • Ability to quickly and effectively communicate with vendors and non-technical staff

  • Ability to identify and incorporate technology that provides value towards attaining organizational goals

  • Thorough knowledge of project management to plan, evaluate and implement projects across departmental lines

  • Ability to develop return on investment calculations for technology investments

  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and supervise the work of others

  • Ability to provide lower level staff or subordinates with effective training and growth opportunities

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing

  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license

  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training

Re quired Experience and Training

  • 1 year of hands-on experience with network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other networking devices. This experience should involve direct work in designing, installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and optimizing network systems.
  • At least 2 years of college education in computer science, information technology or telecommunications
  • A valid drivers license required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
  • Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests. Candidates will be required to take the following assessments:
    1. Vocabulary
    2. Technical Terminology
    3. Basic Reading Comprehension
    4. Logical Reasoning (Decision Making)

Preferred Experience and Training

A bachelors degree in computer science, Information Technology or Telecommunications.

4 years of experience in network engineering with 2 years of hands-on
