Job Summary and Qualifications
Demonstrates the ability to adapt technique/treatment to age of population served, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, while providing care/service with respect to cultural differences and spiritual needs
Utilizing critical thinking skills under supervision of a pathologist, performs gross dissection of irreplaceable surgical tissue to facilitate accurate and timely tissue processing and diagnosis by pathologists
Facilitates receipt of all patient tissue specimens, verifying the accuracy of patient identification information, accessioning specimens and initiating specimen processing to ensure continuity of specimen identification of tissue
Assists the pathologist in tissue dissection, dictation of gross description, processing of tissues for special studies, performing frozen sections, taking photographs, and performing autopsies to ensure efficient workload processing
Prepares fixatives, stains and solutions to facilitate accurate tissue diagnosis
Prepares tissues for frozen sections and other intraoperative consultations under stressful conditions to facilitate timely diagnosis by the pathologists
Performs a wide variety of clerical duties in the surgical pathology and histopathology areas, including tracking specimens, preparing reports, obtaining appropriate signatures, distributing reports, and maintaining slide and report files to ensure efficient operation
Participates in the improvement of operational functions of the department
Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of care and practices identifying opportunities for improvement through collaboration
Properly handling and processing hazardous chemicals and waste as needed
Performs all other job duties as assigned
What qualifications you will need:
Required Education or Experience l Bachelor's degree with courses in biology, anatomy, or other science field
Required Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology
