Distinguishing Features of Work

This is skilled work at the journey level in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures, water circulation, irrigation systems and accessories. Work involves the application of standard trade practices in maintaining and installing a variety of plumbing systems and fixtures. Employees are responsible for determining materials and work methods used and may occasionally supervise unskilled or semiskilled assistants. Assignments come in oral and written form, sometimes accompanied by sketches, from a supervisor. Work is performed independently but is frequently inspected upon completion for adherence to regulatory codes.

Salary Range for this position - \$21.19 - \$25.19 (Exact Salary will be determined based on the qualification.)

Examples of Work Performed
  • Cuts opening in walls for pipes; cuts, reams, and threads pipe; digs trenches or holes with necessary equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs water circulation and irrigation systems, valves, faucets, traps, sinks, wash bowls, sewers, vents and other sanitary fixtures.
  • Installs and maintains PVC pipe systems by opening clogged drains with a plunger or other devises; replaces washers on leaky faucets; tests for leaks by filling pipe with water under pressure and checking with a gauge for fall pressure.
  • Installs pipe and hose on spray trucks and other specially designed equipment and apparatus.
  • Makes estimates of time and materials.
  • Supervises the work of helpers assisting in various phases of the work
  • Installs new irrigation systems, drain lines, etc.
  • Inspects plumbing related equipment for maintenance needs.
  • Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work
  • Thorough knowledge of practices, methods, materials and tools of the plumbing trade
  • Considerable knowledge of plumbing and irrigation systems
  • Knowledge of flows, pressures and capacities of water tank and lines
  • Knowledge of applicable rules, regulations and codes governing plumbing installation in the City
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work
  • Ability to understand and work from general instructions, building specifications, blueprints and sketches.
  • Ability to make time and material estimates
  • Ability to acquire a journeyman grade plumber\'s license
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply information contained in technical repair manuals
  • Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions are present
  • Ability to traverse uneven, sometimes slippery terrain
  • Ability to lean and reach as needed to read and interpret plans and specifications from a print that may be as large as 36 by 48 inches with information printed as small as twenty characters per inch
  • Ability to tolerate minor exposure to swimming pool chemicals and chemicals used in underground and above ground plumbing installation and repair
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training

Required Experience and Training

  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in plumbing maintenance.

  • Ability to acquire a City of Wichita approved and registered journeyman certificate within 90 days of employment.

  • A valid Kansas driver\'s license.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience and Training

  • High School Diploma
  • Plumbing Technical Training.
  • A City of Wichita approved and registered journeyman certificate.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
