This Senior Backend Engineer role in the VMware Service Provider & Edge Business Unit provides you an opportunity to work on an innovative new product that is envisioned to disrupt the telecom industry. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing APIs and implementing the API backend of a large-scale service-based software system. You will work closely with UI/UX engineering, platform engineering, product management and several cross-functional teams to deliver a carrier-grade scalable software platform that will enable novel applications to manage, optimize and monetize the mobile network. In the process, you will work and innovate with the latest technologies in cloud, networking and 5G, collaborate closely with experts in these fields, experience first-hand the process of building a new product, and work in an environment that provides ample learning and career growth opportunities.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • As a key member of the R&D engineering team, you will drive the design, implementation, and testing of APIs and API backend for a new VMware product.

  • Within 30 days of joining, you will be expected to ramp up on the system architecture and high-level design details of the product components. You will be expected to deliver a few simple bug fixes or small features to gain familiarity with the development process.

  • Within 90 days, you will be expected to write functional specifications for the API backend; analyze various technology options to implement the API backed; participate in the design and implementation of functional backend with MVP (Minimum Viable Product) features, deliver bug fixes and small features regularly. You will be expected to implement the API backend in Go language. So, prior experience in Go is preferred.

  • Within 180 days you will be expected to gain expertise in the components that you are working on. You should be able to work with leads on different components to design and implement features that require coordination across the team. Troubleshoot issues reported by customers and improve usability of the product. Develop functional tests and work with System/Scale test teams to make the backend robust and scalable. You will be expected to mentor new hires particularly in the backend team.

  • Within 360 days along with the above, you will be expected to independently design and develop features and collaborate with the team members as needed. You will be a self-starter and lean into projects until the best solution is found.

The Work : What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following assignments:

  • Design, implement and test backend APIs / service-based interfaces needed for a variety of use cases, e.g., monitoring, reporting, configuration

  • Design, implement and test services to serve the APIs; this may require interaction with Cassandra, Elasticsearch, etc.

  • Design, implement and test features for a cloud-native architecture; you will work with Docker containers, microservices, k8s, etc.

  • Work with tools that generate API documentation

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Rakesh Misra. Rakesh is a Director of R&D in VMware and leads an R&D engineering team that is responsible for several VMware products in the telecom space. Rakesh joined VMware in 2019 after the startup he had co-founded, Uhana Inc., to commercialize his Stanford research on data-driven and software-defined telecom networks, was acquired by VMware. His team is based largely in the US and follows open culture at work where everyone is encouraged to learn from each other, teach others and grow along with others by being collaborative and courteous.

Where is this role located?

This team has been historically based out of VMware’s Palo Alto office. However, this role is open to fully remote. If you live in the surrounding area, you will have the option to work from the office partly or fully if you wish to do so.
