What you will do

Johnson Controls’ Wichita operation designs, builds and distributes around one million pieces of residential heating and cooling equipment every year. Johnson Controls Wichita builds and assembles some of the biggest HVAC brands in the industry, including York, Luxaire, Coleman, Champion and Guardian.

The primary manufacturing campus sits on 63 acres with a total of 1.3 million square feet. It has also translated into large employment growth in Wichita, where its workforce is around 1,600 employees which is up nearly 22 percent year over year. The Wichita manufacturing facility is the largest non-aircraft manufacturing plant in Wichita.

The Senior Manufacturing Automation Engineer is accountable for directing, planning, coordinating and implementing automation projects and methods required for premier HVAC manufacturing, and leadership of or participation in process improvement teams. This position is involved in projects to increase plant capacity, improve product quality, and improve process safety utilizing barrier removal techniques and data driven problem solving techniques such as A3 and 8D methods.

How you will do it

  • Lead the execution of automation projects, to achieve business goals, meet production schedules and realize value. Own timely delivery of project work, budget, plan, and documentation.

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of automated cell concepts, automation projects that are highly complex in nature. These can include new or existing equipment, single or multi-process systems.

  • Responsible for creation of Robotics/PLC controlling software, Create HMI screens for complex machinery ensures proper operation of cells, and ensures compliance to safety.

  • Collaborates with Engineering and Tool Engineering on automation solutions and build-plan methodology for new programs; Gives input/feedback on associated design criteria

  • Supports cross-functional teams in the development and implementation of automated systems in support of fabrication and assembly line manufacturing.

  • Works with vendors/suppliers regarding sourcing, technology information.

  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of pertinent automation technologies and disseminates this information as requested to various Quality, Engineering, and Manufacturing groups.

  • Use Six Sigma tools to lead complex process automation investigation.

  • Other duties may be assigned.

What we look for


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics or Industrial Automation or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in automation, PLC and HMI programming.

  • Experience with the architecture of full automation systems.

  • Proficiency using MS Office Suite.

  • Proficiency using Autodesk. or equivalent software, and process capability software.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated decision making ability.

  • Effective and professional communication and organization skills.

  • Strong presentation, teamwork and coaching skills and demonstrated leadership abilities


  • Computer programming language capability (C, C#, MATLAB, etc.)
