Summary The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is seeking a highly qualified candidate for a Sewing Machine Operator position in Wichita Kansas. Salary: WG 3: $19.63 - $22.91 per hour Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday Position Title/PD #: Sewing Machine Operator/PD# 09560-0 Bargaining Unit Status: covered Fair Labor Standards Act: Non-Exempt Responsibilities DUTIES: Sewing Machine Operations Operates standard high-speed industrial sewing machine to perform a number of operations in the manufacture of items in the laundry/linen department. The operations performed are often in concentrated areas or on minor components of the garment and involve using basic sewing techniques. Machinery to be used would include lockstitch flat bed, bar tacking machine, ziz-zag, buttonhole, eyelet, over edge, cylinder, and chain stitch sewing machines. Also performs hand sewing. May occasionally perform related non-sewing work depending on the workload. Production Identifies and bundles garments according to size and lot by appropriately marking and attaching tickets, using an automatic ticketing machine. Prepares for assembly work already cut. Other duties include making records of cutting lots, making labels for all garments, preparing production tickets, and attaching same to cut garment pieces, rolling trimmings, etc. Positions fusible reinforcements onto cut parts and feeds into automatic fusing machine. Operates portable steam ironing machine to open seams and press parts of items in process. Performs other duties as assigned. Skill and Knowledge Knowledge and skill to perform basic machine sewing techniques such as straight or slightly curved stitching and topstitching. These skills apply to use on standard machines as well as on specialized machines, such as chain stitch and over edge. Must have the dexterity to work with small items where frequent alignment and positioning may be involved due to corners and irregular shapes. As work is often performed on automatic stitching machines or on manual equipment, the incumbent must be able to use eye coordination to accurately align articles to the machine at the proper location. Also, must be able to use shears for trimming, clipping, etc. and patterns for marking. Precision is important because of concern for appearance. Knowledge of the irons and portable press machine heads and the skill in operating in order to apply proper amounts of steam and pressure. Knowledge of the different types of materials used as related to pressing times required. Ability to press garment in prescribed sequence in process of manufacture. Physical Requirements: Sits and/or stands for long periods of time with continued movement of hand, arms, and fingers in placing items in position for sewing, ticketing, or pressing. Handles pieces of fabric or articles of clothing that are relatively heavy and bulky. Working Conditions: Shop is adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Operators are subject to cuts, punctures, scratches, burns, and other minor irritations and injuries from handling sharp tools and pressing equipment. Subject to allergies from dyes, dust, and lint from fabrics. Also, operators are subject to noise from sewing machines.
