This role is your chance to be the go-to expert in City code enforcement, specializing in Short Term Rentals, municipal zoning, signage, occupational and business licensing. \ Workdays and Hours:This is a part time position from Monday - Friday, no more than 20 hours per week. Exact shift and hours will be determined at hire.\ \ Bargaining Unit: No Union Representation\ \ Posting may close at any time or once max number of applicants has been reached.
Examples of Work Performed
- Inspects or oversees and coordinates the inspection of business establishments such as Short-Term Rentals, pawnbrokers, dance halls, private clubs, home occupations, itinerant merchants, and secondhand dealers for compliance with occupational license laws of the City.
- Investigates and inspects various locations for appropriate use and occupancy as provided in the City zoning ordinance and related special use approvals through the Planning Commission and the City Council.
- Inspects oil and gas wells, auto wreckers, and cereal malt beverage establishments for compliance with occupational license laws of the City.
- Inspects, monitors, enforces and/or oversees all the provisions of BZAs and CUP requirements and may attend BZA Hearings and Planning Commission meetings.
- Inspects permanent and temporary signs for conformance to appropriate codes.
- Follows up inspections for violations and secures compliance with codes and laws.
- Answers inquiries and complaints over the phone or at the counter.
- Writes reports and prepares notices of violations, citations and/or uniform criminal complaints as required.
- Employee must enforce all of the above enforcement duties and areas.
- Assists and performs some supervision of lower-level inspectors.

Requirements of Work
- Thorough knowledge of the zoning ordinance, sign ordinance, and appropriate occupational license laws.
- Ability to read and interpret code regulations.
- Ability to detect violations; confer with property owners in regard to requirements of City ordinances related to the immediate problem, and to work out a satisfactory solution to gain full compliance with codes, using firmness and tact.
- Ability to traverse uneven terrain and/or rotted or uneven floor surfaces and ascend and descend steps; and bend and stoop and/or crawl to look into or under building crawl spaces, cellars, attics and foundations.
- Ability to take inspection report notes in the field.
- Ability to operate a 35 mm camera or cell phone to take pictures of violations.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work occasionally in the evenings or on weekends.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
Required Experience and Training:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1 year of experience in public contact work particularly in dealing with difficult or disgruntled individuals demonstrating high levels of patience and conflict resolution skills. The public contact experience can be in the following fields:
- Healthcare
- Schools
- Hospitality
- Government agencies
- 1 year of experience to document and report findings accurately, including narratives.
- 1 year of experience using excellent organizational and time-management skills by handling multiple projects efficiently.
- Must successfully pass the Housing Code Enforcement Test and departmental Zoning Level 1 test within the first six months of employment.
- A valid Kansas driver\'s license.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
