The Strategic Program Manager II, Tanzu Compliance is an integral part of the MAPBU Product organization and will work closely with our Staff Strategic Program Manager, Tanzu Compliance to scale the compliance program across all Tanzu product pillars. In this role, you will work closely with stakeholders across VMware, including MAPBU R&D, sales and solutions engineering, legal, finance, compliance, privacy, and security.

What is the primary need, business challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

In this role, you will be responsible for working with multiple product teams to drive Tanzu Compliance Program initiatives to meet business objectives and deliver customer outcomes. The environment is extremely complex and the team has a broad responsibility that encompasses compliance for all Tanzu products and services. A major initial focus for this role will be on our U.S. Federal Government customer compliance requirements. Compliance is a critical element of the VMware Tanzu portfolio (https://cloud.vmware.com/tanzu) , and your impact will enable growth into new markets.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • Success in the first three months means working with the Staff Strategic Program Manager to deliver new program processes and systems to scale the compliance organization.

  • Success in the first six months means successfully delivering customer-focused, compliance outcomes for multiple product offerings.

  • Success in the first twelve months means partnering with individual product and engineering teams to deliver critical compliance initiatives such as FedRAMP, FIPS, and PCI-DSS across the VMware Tanzu portfolio (https://cloud.vmware.com/tanzu) .

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Your role will be horizontal and drive product compliance across multiple product pillars as well as all shared compliance tooling.

  • You will help drive the short- and long-term strategy for the Tanzu compliance program.

  • You will work closely with the Staff Strategic Program Manager, Tanzu Compliance to establish program processes and systems to ensure that the compliance program can scale.

  • You will collaborate with other Tanzu teams to plan and deliver integrated compliance work streams across the portfolio. An ability to navigate complex decision making and effectively communicate across teams will be critical to success.

  • You will partner with product owners and engineering to drive compliance initiatives into successful product releases.

  • You will ensure that program landscape transitions are healthy and resilient.

  • You will systematically reduce the toil of security and compliance.

What are the key experience/skill requirements?

  • You have extensive knowledge and practical experience with Program Management across complex, multi-program enterprise software R&D organizations that are delivering product features and managing dependencies between other programs and products within a large portfolio.

  • You have knowledge of and practical experience with agile software delivery methodologies and portfolio management for SaaS, on-premise, or hybrid software delivery models.

  • You have demonstrated a proven track record of defining, establishing, and maintaining a consistent, traceable decision-making process across a heterogeneous landscape of stakeholders.

  • You have demonstrated a proven track record of establishing organizational and software delivery metrics, building reports and dashboards detailing health including customer success, project execution, and program health.

  • Experience as the interface between Go-To-Market teams and R&D, planning and coordinating efforts to support aligned business planning, tracking, and communication of product delivery expectations with potential and existing customers is a plus.

  • Experience bringing together heterogeneous data sources and team / program working styles into one cohesive cross-organizational view of portfolio health is a plus.

  • Experience working in highly regulated and compliance driven environments is highly desirable.

  • Experience working with FedRAMP, SOC 2, NIST, ISO 27001, HIPAA, and SOX is a plus.

  • Experience working with complex U.S. Federal Government or other public sector compliance requirements is highly desirable.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Thomas Underhill, Director of Product Management, leading the Tanzu Compliance Program. Thomas joined VMware from HashiCorp, where he built out HashiCorp’s Product Compliance function and previously worked at Oracle Cloud, HP Enterprise (EDS), PayPal, and a variety of SaaS startups. The Tanzu Compliance Program team is made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds who are excited about delivering compliant, enterprise-ready offerings to enable Tanzu’s largest customers to build, run, and manage modern applications. You may take day-to-day direction from the Staff Strategic Program Manager and need to be comfortable working in matrixed reporting structures.
